We are still in Rote and loving discovering the culture and the different communities here. A small but very vibrant sailing group has started to arise over the last couple of years. This is because of Bruce, as he builds these little sailing tri-marans. There are 3-4 races per year with individual honours and an overall winner of the Triple Klown cup. This series is very informal and more of a social occasion but the racing itself is taken quite seriously.
I was lucky enough to be at Bruces boatshed one windy day and Vice Kommadoor Andy took me out for a blast around the lagoon on his boat. Wet and wild! Bruce pushed it a little hard with his big sail and I was pretty lucky to be following him with my drone

G'day guys, welcome to another episode. This weekΒ we're on the island of Rote and i'm going to show youΒ Β

the sailing community here. It's such a rad littleΒ community they've got going and it's sort ofΒ Β

loosely based around a guy called bruce he's setΒ up a boat yard here he employs a few local guysΒ Β

teaching them how to fiberglass how to fabricateΒ things and they started building these littleΒ Β

trimarans they're just basic little tri-man singleΒ sail single mast and these things rip let meΒ Β

show you how all this works it's incredible we'veΒ made molds for all of these yeah we've made moldsΒ Β

and also with the local guys here teaching themΒ about fiberglass and we you know we go throughΒ Β

stages this is how you use it this is whatΒ you use it for this is how you make a moldΒ Β

and this is how you take them out stick themΒ together it's well let's go and have a lookΒ Β

in the shed and see what you're up to in thereΒ so when did you build this shed oh i built thisΒ Β

last year year before okay before that weΒ worked out of the back of my house over hereΒ Β

and then things started getting a little bitΒ more serious so um i've stuck my neck out andΒ Β

loose this land and the other thing we doΒ in storage in the off season for all theΒ Β

hotel and people store theirΒ boats in the wet season

so yeah we got we made this big mould here forΒ the big java canoes oh so this is a this is aΒ Β

mold to make more canoes out of yeah this isΒ they're called jacoons out of java fantasticΒ Β

boat all right and these are the moulds for theΒ outrigger zone yeah that's all the molds thereΒ Β

that's like the decks although theΒ decks for the main this is the topsΒ Β

and so how many of these time runs have weΒ got out here now oh we've got about 10 yeahΒ Β

and uh so there's a race coming up in a in aΒ oh it's only 10 days from now another 10 daysΒ Β

the big race yes any predictions oh me firstΒ yeah first but does everyone else let you winΒ Β

because you're the yeah they feel sorry for meΒ because i'm a poor bastard see one of the keenestΒ Β

of these trimaran sailors is a guy called andyΒ and he offered to take me out for a rip aroundΒ Β

the lagoon man these things fly you sit so lowΒ to the ground it's like being in a go-kart butΒ Β

yeah you do get pretty drenched as you see hereΒ but yeah what an adrenaline rush these things fly

oh

so bruce is constantly tweakingΒ his designs putting on bigger mastsΒ Β

biggest sails little dagger boardsΒ okay all tweaked ready to fairly go

and here he is going out to try this um laser sailΒ that is cut down and uh it's about a 20 to 30 knotΒ Β

wind day and it's howling out there and you watchΒ this thing rip but yeah it's all about the fun

when you see these things just on aΒ beam reach and there's just a bit ofΒ Β

a gust of wind and it's just boom they justΒ accelerate from six to 12 knots in an instant

so she blew out her blew the whole sail outΒ Β

yeah there's there's a couple good rips in it tooΒ yeah i guess i couldn't believe the power in itΒ Β

there's probably 30 knots out there gustingΒ huh yeah for sure she's had a blowout theΒ Β

plugger she blew out oh well pushing theΒ limits that's the strongest win we've had aΒ Β

long time and that's the first time with the bigΒ sailing strongly we've usually got the little onesΒ Β

the race that bruce was talking about before isΒ the triple clown pretty much everyone who ownsΒ Β

one of these trimarans on the island enters thisΒ race and it's a great day out and yeah i filmedΒ Β

the whole thing here you go i'll let bruce andΒ andy explain the whole concept enjoy this partΒ Β

okay welcome the umbrella yacht club uh as youΒ can see we've got the fleet here and uh on theΒ Β

commodore bruce commodore and this is the manΒ in charge of the vices he's the voice commodoreΒ Β

captain andy ah this is the fourth round of theΒ kalapa cup we've had four rounds take the bestΒ Β

three out of four and the winner gets he's theΒ winner of the triple clown trophy the prestigiousΒ Β

um most unbelievable thing you've ever seen andyΒ i'd say it's amazing work of art it is i agreeΒ Β

yes we started this first event last year startedΒ with the kalapa cup then we had the corona clubΒ Β

and then this year we had the uh crab claw cupΒ which was six weeks ago and we're getting moreΒ Β

and more entrance every year we're up to 14Β competitors and the boat building 15 15 sorryΒ Β

and every year it's getting more andΒ more competitive which is a great thingΒ Β

we get all the locals here becomes a big localΒ event for a day out and uh it's just somethingΒ Β

that's getting bigger and bigger every year whichΒ is fantastic and what's this year's event calledΒ Β

uh today's uh a tribute a tribute to uh kieran andΒ sailing excellence pursuit of sailing excellenceΒ Β

the pursuit of sailing excellency okayΒ ladies are you on a team together today

what are your chances of winning this oneΒ Β

don't know about that this is our firstΒ time we're going to win it anyway hopefully

little nervous excited oh yeahΒ there's always a bit of pressureΒ Β

on the competitors the other competitors i'mΒ talking about it's going to be a challengeΒ Β

one of the two you're all here nowΒ in the bar you know where you areΒ Β

all right same start as last time down the beachΒ around the boat out here then up to the gap in theΒ Β

roof here now there'll be a big white boat parkedΒ up there you can't miss it if you do bad luckΒ Β

then over to the boat shed and back down toΒ here three times so before we do anythingΒ Β

we're going to meet echo and all captainsΒ outside we're going to get a group photo

oh yeah over 70s in front 130 over 70 in front oh

all right the kanga cup willΒ begin in five four three two one

uh third place today we haveΒ choppo in his first raceΒ Β

taking a third place there's no prize money orΒ trophy or anything or not even a ribbon no i

and he couldn't see he was already handicappedΒ second place today is commander in training andy

okay and if ever anybody remembersΒ the last race buying andy drinksΒ Β

after race probably not a good ideaΒ okay in first place today we haveΒ Β

the impressionable brian brianΒ where'd you go good job brian ryan

uh first of all i'd like to uh thankΒ everybody that organizes this whole gigΒ Β

it's a a tremendous day and and i've reallyΒ enjoyed the sailing secondly jerry thank you forΒ Β

letting me use your old boat it's a bloodyΒ weapon it's an absolute bloody uh rocket andΒ Β

uh thanks for linda the sale uh andy you're goodΒ luck in third place uh the uruguayan nightmareΒ Β

diego is uh who's not present today and he's inΒ second place for the troll crowd to share jerryΒ Β

i'm gonna tell diego everybodyΒ clap for jerry but not for diegoΒ Β

and in first place our commodore entraining ending

andy is our first official triple clown winnerΒ Β

a trophy that will give childrenΒ nightmares for the remainder of their lives

that's a beauty it'll be here in 100 yearsΒ time to come with a big clock underneathΒ Β

all right andy a little worried from ourΒ reigning champion as always it's a fantasticΒ Β

event except for the spanish armada whoΒ drank all the beer on the first markΒ Β

and that left no beer for any other competitorsΒ so they're disqualified um it's fantastic as iΒ Β

said last race it's um we've been seeing theΒ numbers increase we've got boats and activityΒ Β

with new people participating we launched twoΒ new boats this week and they were here todayΒ Β

so it's a great thing that's just getting biggerΒ and bigger every year i started off to i was allΒ Β

keen when i started off last year didn't evenΒ get off the beach with a broken mast so it's

came back strong and it's great to have thisΒ amazing thing which has been created by liz builtΒ Β

this yeah it's all it's all cut all coconuts he'sΒ donated that and these things will be passed onΒ Β

from year to year to the um individual thatΒ wins them and the the yacht club's evolving it'sΒ Β

developing we hope to bring the juniors in andΒ get something happening in sailing on the weekendsΒ Β

and things and training and something to enjoyΒ on the amazing place we have so that's it allΒ Β

right thank you and oh yes and we had today firstΒ ever participating the girls searching and saved

well there you go guys that was an awesomeΒ day good to see all these guys having funΒ Β
