Relocating the engine control panel was a big improvement, but left some serious ugliness in the galley area. I build a beautiful box to hide this in plain sight. The chunky cable to the engine is routed along with the beginnings of the NMEA2000 network. In further beautification, the saloon cushions are upholstered as I learn some sewing skills!
This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!

hi i'm tony this is sv tapacha and we're
0:09
starting off this week down below in
0:11
this this cruising sailboat that we're
0:13
building
0:14
um everything that's that's you know
0:16
happened this week has been
0:18
either directly in here or relevant to
0:21
down below it's a bit chilly so you know
0:24
we're not doing much on the outside of
0:25
the boat at the moment having said that
0:28
i have ordered some parts that will
0:30
when they arrive or
0:32
some materials is a better word but when
0:35
their arrival allow me to make a start
0:37
on the ballast kill so that's
0:38
you know i'm looking forward to cracking
0:40
on with that and we'll be fairly soon
0:42
making a start on that ballast kill
0:44
um
0:46
cranes in the background huh i wonder if
0:48
you can hear them now you remember a
0:49
short time ago i had to move the engine
0:51
control panel i had originally mounted
0:54
it in the cockpit well and i decided to
0:56
move it up onto the bulkhead underneath
0:58
the chart plotter
1:12
[Applause]
1:25
um which was certainly a better location
1:27
in terms of the cockpit location
1:30
but that
1:31
brought one very obvious problem and
1:33
that is that the back of the of that
1:36
engine control panel is now protruding
1:38
into the galley area in fact there it is
1:41
behind me
1:43
um it's not the most beautiful thing to
1:45
see in the galley and there's one other
1:47
problem that comes with that is that
1:49
there's a darn great thick cable in fact
1:52
you might see it there
1:54
um downgrade thick cable that comes out
1:57
the back of that engine control cam
1:59
panel
2:00
and runs through to the engine
2:04
um
2:05
one of the reasons why i put it in the
2:06
cockpit well was it it was possible to
2:08
root that cable completely completely
2:10
out of sight entirely in the engine room
2:12
but as i say the issue of having it uh
2:15
here in the galley is that uh
2:17
have to try and root it as tightly as
2:20
possible
2:22
so um started off making this teak box
2:25
out of some some old teak that i had
2:27
left over from miss marley
2:29
um
2:30
which will hide the back of that engine
2:32
control panel
2:34
and also have to route that cable
2:36
through into the engine room
2:38
now there's one other issue that i still
2:40
haven't mentioned is that it's the cable
2:42
i have and these you know they're fairly
2:44
expensive these cables and i have one
2:47
is very very very very long
2:51
and actually
2:52
mounting the panel there is a bit of an
2:55
advantage because it's a bit further
2:56
away but i still
2:59
was in two mines for a while whether to
3:01
chop the cable shorten it and which
3:03
would of course be possible but in the
3:04
end i've decided at least temporarily
3:07
just to build a sort of cable spool
3:10
thing wind it around that to get rid of
3:12
all the excess cable
3:14
and you'll see how i've done that
3:17
[Applause]
3:29
[Music]
3:43
[Applause]
4:06
oh
4:27
[Music]
4:28
[Applause]
6:04
you
6:30
[Applause]
6:51
[Applause]
7:02
[Applause]
7:15
[Applause]
7:17
[Music]
7:19
[Applause]
7:38
oh
7:46
hey
7:59
hmm
8:26
um
8:28
[Music]
8:35
[Laughter]
9:12
[Applause]
9:28
[Laughter]
9:41
that's nearly true
9:49
[Music]
10:01
um
10:08
[Music]
10:26
[Laughter]
10:31
um
11:04
[Applause]
11:11
there must be right
11:26
all right
11:31
[Applause]
11:40
[Applause]
12:08
so
12:14
[Applause]
12:21
[Applause]
12:27
[Applause]
12:28
okay
13:24
that's quite nice
13:32
[Applause]
13:38
um
13:47
[Applause]
13:51
yeah that was quite nice
13:54
it looks quite nice
14:14
yeah so here i am in the engine room
14:16
it's a tricky place to film but
14:18
and also get this very echoey sound but
14:20
there's the cable coming through you'll
14:22
also notice
14:23
enemy two
14:25
thousand
14:27
bus in there um also coming through from
14:29
the back of the plotter into that
14:32
splitter there four-way splitter
14:35
um
14:36
so that's
14:37
coming in
14:38
and there's the engine cable running
14:40
through runs along it's coming down
14:45
connects into the engine down there
14:47
and here
14:50
is the delightful cable spool i've made
14:52
up as i say temporary
14:55
possibly
14:58
um certainly gets rid of all the slack
15:00
fairly tightly
15:04
a glance this way looking forwards from
15:07
the galley area
15:08
will reveal
15:10
quite a mess uh something's disappeared
15:13
all the foam that would cut the shape i
15:16
cut to shape for the saloon cushions is
15:18
gone
15:19
simple reason for that is that it's
15:21
indoors and karen and i have been
15:24
working on upholstery covering all those
15:27
foam cushions
15:28
uh five pieces the seats and backs for
15:32
the two s c sides and the little one
15:35
sort of trapezoid
15:37
thing that fits between them um and it's
15:40
been going very well we're you know we
15:43
wanted to do the upholstery ourselves
15:47
started off with the first cushion
15:49
obviously it's the hardest one
15:51
you're sort of getting your concept
15:52
together so there's a fair bit of head
15:54
scratching involved
15:56
but then we took a break sat down
15:59
watched the episode of salt and tar
16:01
where they're doing their upholstery
16:04
and it was a massive help i have to say
16:06
and isn't that a wonderful thing you
16:07
know youtube
16:09
you can uh
16:11
if you're not
16:12
and i'm an expert if you're not sure how
16:15
to do something you can go and get a
16:17
youtube video up
16:18
um and i love the way salt and tar did
16:21
their episode you know it's not too not
16:23
too instructional but but you can see
16:25
what they're doing
16:26
um and it helped us massively so big
16:29
thank you to them guys for putting that
16:31
video up massive help got our concept
16:34
together and the way we win
16:36
um karen is fairly good at sewing i
16:39
am not
16:40
but i was rather keen to have a go
16:42
myself so
16:43
she did the first one and i sort of
16:45
watched and
16:46
learned a bit and then i had to go
16:48
myself
17:23
yeah you see that right that's fine
17:29
now we'll move that out of the way
17:32
like that
17:33
this edge is right because i've measured
17:35
that out already yeah
17:36
this one wants to come out here twelve
17:38
and a half out there screw it on
18:09
that's right
18:17
like that
18:19
one there
18:51
ah yes
19:07
yeah just like that
19:11
[Applause]
19:37
beautiful it's perfect
19:40
it's perfect isn't it it's not even pack
19:42
it up in their corner
19:52
bad though
19:54
yeah
19:57
so i have to saw it again that's all
19:59
this is that
20:00
[Laughter]
20:08
what's up
20:11
[Applause]
20:26
uh
20:27
[Applause]
20:33
[Applause]
20:38
[Music]
20:40
hey
20:43
[Applause]
20:50
[Applause]
20:56
[Applause]
21:04
show you the lovely views
21:06
like a fishy good
21:08
yeah there we go
21:10
there you are so we've got a hand sodium
21:11
there aren't we still yeah
21:15
yeah
21:17
but it looks really good
21:29
[Music]
22:18

22:20

25:19
we've still got one or two ends to sum
25:21
up that the hand sewn ends that karen's
25:23
working on
25:25
but they look great really really
25:27
