so hazel bought a boat I noted how'd you
know as you know from last time and it
was located on the Isle of Wight which
is off of the south coast of England for
those of you don't know the area the
other white is sort of midway along the
south coast of England and the area
between yayoi and and the mainland
England is called the Solent the boat
itself was in the inkowl's wasn't it yes
on the river Modena which is the river
that runs out it cows cows as you may
well know this is a major yachting
center as the point of the start of the
Fastnet race the famous or infamous
farts Fastnet race infamous one year
famous every other year I think yes sir
she was bored on the midi neighing cows
and I you flew out on the Thursday
didn't you yeah yeah and I flew out like
a while at the time I got down it was
the Sunday yes you've been out a few
days oh and just had a look at the boat
went through everything again did a bit
of paperwork there's such thing as
people working bill asylum yeah exactly
we bought some food yeah provisions yes
man just generally looked about there
was a little problem with the engine
yeah that's right the exhaust manifold
yes
hold it but that got exchanged yeah new
warmest beauty exactly provisioned
fueled waters let gather ready to go
yeah and we're not going over there on
the Sunday she was nearly ready to go
wasn't she yeah I said there was one one
thing that was a bit of an issue I felt
was and that was ridden of a dinghy yes
the previous ironist even Sally Sally
came with us on the trip but but Steve
had to look online and found a nave on
red crest as well just across on the
mainland in Limington new forest so we
took the ferry across the way yeah and
bought the dinghy on the carpark yeah
the people in the carpark
they folded it out yeah and so yeah it
looks good yes we're bought it there and
then the map yeah it did look good it's
in very good condition yeah sorry back
on the ferry back to the other one with
dinghy
pretty much ready what we really have
last bits provisioning yeah yeah fresh
stuff last time yeah
so the Tuesday morning we were out at
the boat shortly before 7:00 I believe
yeah man's I think we said we set off
shortly before 8:00
[Applause]
you
so that was time to catch the outgoing
tide during a favorable tide for the for
the first leg of the trip sure Debra as
you say on our ye shortened for a down
the Medina out into the Solent Freddie
calm winds when we get out there but as
you'd expect that time in the morning
rid most days but favorable tired make
good progress than me yes I old almost
immediately when I passed those
Napoleonic fourths of a built there to
be to protect the Solon and probably the
main that harbors to be honest be
different when the podiums mates
so light
[Applause]
what
honey
[Applause]
yeah and then out into the into the
English Channel whereas you say that's
the day you went on the wind sort of
built a bit limo yeah and if we're
honest read that the biggest waves of
the whole trip yeah afternoon that
evening didn't we yeah two and a half
metres wouldn't be an exaggeration
I think certainly look pretty big yeah
yeah but we soured on and originally
intended to do three our watches was
when into the night but given their the
sea state we changed and in fact we're
on a boat that we not sailed before we
were with Sally of course she was held
to boat alone we were on the boat we
don't sail before so we changed our
minds had changed it to one our watches
yeah give one hour on the helm and two
hours sleeping or trying to at least
yeah yeah which well it worked for that
so I think we chose to do it that day as
well because it was quite windy and we
had taken some reason and just so just
in case mm-hmm um wind was from the
southwest
so it was basically behind us which is
did he come people in the South
especially with a jungle yeah but yeah
it was a took some energy to news but
come the morning we were very close to
diverse we dream in the favorable tide
all the way through which I'd heard as
possible
give us a smile
[Music]
passed over and out into the the channel
where we are planning to cross it he has
a boy about ten miles northeast yeah
Goodwin town
yes I'm wonderful Goodwin's yet yeah
that we were going to use as our point
across the the traffic separation scheme
yeah
and that was surprisingly easy there
wasn't that much traffic really was
there no surprise as well yeah couple of
ships to avoid but but yeah not too much
easy and the actual traffic separation
scheme is is four miles wide in each
direction it's as 8 miles in total yeah
master figures about an hour and
three-quarters to get across that motor
so yeah it was a plan to get across as
quickly as possible yeah it is yeah why
is that yeah I think so too you don't
really hanging around in that stuff
obviously you know if you have to cross
it a 90 degrees and arrived on the other
side of somewhere off of Dunkirk but
quite wet out to see throughout the
traffic separation zone
what's the barometer honey
I know
oh yeah
and then we turned up yeah up north ish
yeah
yeah indeed close with the coast
gradually pass the coast of France
they're just Belgium yeah yeah past
Belgium quick pretty quickly not the
biggest places no no in so intended the
Belgians and in Holland the Netherlands
don't ever there's a lot of coast than
the owners comes and also certainly the
busiest in terms of shipping yeah piece
that we did know that area off of
Rotterdam and was a big port my
Rotterdam could you report to me that
was there was a lot of shipping down in
the other there and sometimes you
crossed those places at night as well a
bit iffy sometimes mmm yeah it's a
density cafe don't it yeah yeah
obviously we didn't have any my mom
didn't have any issues at all there are
one or two occasions when a ship is
coming straight that you think oh but
there was did yeah yeah we had a radar
reflector happened yeah this bothers on
one occasion a ship that is searchlight
and and Sean it at us when I was on the
helmet very thankful for looking at
listen you think change course yeah good
yes indeed yeah that's that's the most
worrying thing isn't it going through
going through commercial shipping at
night yeah
naturally
[Applause]
[Applause]
[Music]
we won't see it go down properly because
of the this is Dave for isn't it
day four and it's the morning that nine
o'clock in the morning beautiful sunny
morning where you got wind just after
after the beam we show you some sails
all those my needs a son but just after
the beam come back hazel Sadie nicely
add a bit of commercial traffic around
last night going into various Dutch
reports right now not much commercial
driving at all in fact almost nothing
while are there and the distance there
she can see that on this camera Oh a
couple over there it's a bit more Nell
birdie there's absolutely nothing to be
seen after a fairly busy night
the progress was good the southwesterly
stayed with us up until almost to the
north of the Netherlands than it often
the Dutch Frisian Islands yeah we're
then I think did you go very calm for a
while and then we are we are calm days
one calm
so I'm getting luck took about hat very
very car
yeah
into the Sun burka that it's glossy then
it turned to come from basically from
the east doesn't it yeah responses the
last two days basically heading straight
into the window which clearly we could
have could have beaten into it but we
were rather keen to get there one way we
did five days non-stop the last I of
which we've murders held the rest of it
we've sold the vast but yeah and the
last I was mainly about ourselves
and we went into we're getting fairly
low in diesel in that stage yeah so we
decided to go into northern I one of the
German islands one of the first of the
German of Frisian Islands the way we
were not the first but now that decided
to go into there's a marina round that
the inner side isn't there yeah when you
look at the map you said you see those
freezing islands stretching out and you
think you could go up the inside but in
fact you can't and that it all dries so
you can get through to a high water but
you could we'll end up setting the
mother yes in the marina spent the night
there
very nice wasn't very nice yeah took a
walk around to the fuel stations about
jerrycans
PC card in slot there and the number
normal that for them written
instructions
[Applause]
[Applause]
yeah and the beer and some food at the
restaurant
very nice good night's sleep five days
non-stop and and you know you're doing
watches aren't you in yeah we did we
carried on do another one or two our
watches we didn't never move over the
two-hour watches did we you know you
know it's broken you didn't get a full
night's sleep at any stage so you grab a
couple of hours here and a group over
there interesting experience really hmm
they're fairly tiring all right yeah you
manage yeah what did you think well I
thought it was fairly tiring to know
yeah because I wasn't doing too well
either
oh yeah yeah yeah oh yeah next morning
Sabbath early again seven o'clock
tomorrow shortly before 7:00 we were
under way from northern I out the
channel and easterly winds again two
motors held up towards the the yarder je
doin through in addition the yarder
so along the frisian islands again
turned down into the other where we
picked up a favorable wind on the beam
basically down into the yarder and we
knew the marina the hazel had picked out
our in destination we knew we had to go
through a lot as a sea lock to get in
yeah in a yard oh yeah I think it's
called the coarser but we thought there
were two locks is that yeah it's one big
naval lot which is a massive loss I
thought there are two other side under
there and we thought there was a small a
lot too much yeah what I mean there is
one no one they used to be just not been
useful I think that two years it turned
out yeah so we were they were wandering
around or boating around looking for the
smaller lock and and then turned out it
was out of the uses as opposed to says
so we went into the local sailing club
that was moved in dark or get towards
dark went into local sailing club spent
the night there and then we have to work
out what to do about the lock to me and
and I had to look online that evening we
found a phone number of the of the the
lock Meister yeah and you found him
about quarter to eight or something yeah
next next morning yeah and then he said
basically yeah he has certain lock times
when people for people to get out on
lock times for people to get in and he
said the next one would be at 8:15 okay
yeah we can make it because we weren't
that far away this is up at the naval
dock yeah Big Love yeah so we got going
very quickly
yes motives as fast as we dared yeah
and not to the neighbor daughter yeah we
went we went in time but the nice man
waiting for us
got five minutes like that and we
weren't the only ones going in as it is
in norm look the only boat
oh so you're gonna do slaloms in
the lock but we did tires and white
okay okay
it
yeah
and then through a lot okay and we
thought group we're in off to the marina
and then it came to the bridge which
looked to be high enough for us to get
under with our master there was no it
wasn't no no
so we tie it up again looked at the
bridge no VHF channel or phone number or
anything on it yes bondo scratch our
heads what to do well then I called the
marina which I had picked out and I sort
of I called them before and assets they
had some space for us and so they knew
we were coming so I called them and
asked the man how we would get through
this bridge and he gave me a phone
number to the person guarding or
controlling the branch Angus and I
phoned him up you know so if if you
could open it for us and it was no
problem at all bridge yeah yeah yeah
well you went outside of his tower and
said oh yeah I seen you you're that
little boat there and no problem I can
open my up for you to open the bridge
one half has fixed the other half swang
opened and rotated database did look
great on it and we moved it through
there
yeah I'm pretty damn cool
I'm very impressed
yeah
Thank You Shan
pretty cool
down the last little leg wasn't very far
from this brain was it last a little
marina yeah
so six days full days and and a few
hours the following morning me six full
days and there and if you ask from the
Alawite to yes your trip yeah it was
great
yeah it really solid yeah not turned out
oh no no handled everything we asked it
disease yeah and there's big enough for
three of us it was I wish it just as a
big big thank you to Sally who came with
us yeah she worked our socks off did if
we're honest the majority of the cookie
and producer brilliant food and then
three linka excellent yeah alright watch
is great sailor excellent yeah yeah good
son that's it see you next time
