We made it over to Whitehaven in Cumbia from the Isle of Man and we looked at The Rum Story (link below) which tells the story of Whitehaven, Antigua, rum and profits made on the slave trade.

The weather played merry havoc with us and we left Whitehaven in heavy, rolly seas with a westerly fetch when we wanted to go south. When we finally arrived at Liverpool the weather turned from calm, pleasant weather to a Force 7 gusting 8 so we had an unpleasant night waiting for the lock gate to open

one of the more intriguing features of
being in the crow's nest is it has these
things with them pointing out directions
to various places in the world 10 oh
I've got the foggiest clue
[Music]
it's thrills rate I can drink it very
well look at this are you she reminds me
down here down into the vaults those
drops of light no proper volt something
proper all bombers I have to say it's
most unusual museums here I've been on
and sometime well and you've got to
bring your own light oh yeah there's the
walls mmm
one thing that quickly became apparent
was that the rum industry was built on
the back of slaves to its credit the
wrong story exhibits did not shy away
from this yes and date
this is represents the inside of a slave
ship and shows you sort of conditions
people were transported in and I've ever
took anything to convince you that
slavery is not complete that are wrong a
visit to the wrong story might not be a
bad place to start this is an actual
document from a slave plantation I mean
these are the names of actual people
you're sold by cargo
[Music]
[Applause]
laughter the poundage trafalgar Horatio
Nelson was famous for being in bound in
a cask of Navy rum so they could bring
his body back I don't know it was a cask
of Jefferson's whitehaven drummer and
out so then Gaynor where are where are
we and what are we about to do favor
have we're actually contemplating doing
the entire journey all the way to
Liverpool because the weather is such
that we basically go for it now oh we're
going anywhere
yeah so busy we've got one day yeah of
moderate weather to do a 12 or 15 hour
passage yeah we've got a pot we have got
a plan that we were gonna sort of like
stop Ireland do some other stuff just
ain't gonna happen
you've got to go with the weather and
and that's the way it works around there
yep the weather dictates and it's one
o'clock in the morning at the minutes
roughly yeah now we've got a prepper
boat in the dark one in the morning yeah
we've gotta go out through a sea lock
yep we got to get rind a contrary head
yep and then we got to go south for
about 60 miles and avoid gas fields and
lobster pots just in case say I know
we've got some night hours back under
our belt but my god do we have to go for
so many well you're not going to get
that many night hours son right now
summarize in four hours
yeah yep so at least we don't have to do
passage in the dark no get to see my
favorite time of the day sunrise

I don't know if you can hear that but
that is the sound of our propeller going
round while we're under sail this is why
some people put a generator on the
propeller so that when they are
physically sailing they're at least
making electricity but you can just hear
it
and it's going around quite a bit to be
honest Ferb has just put the engine in
Reverse and it is stopped so if that's a
little trick if you want it to were
stopped just put it in reverse this
morning Bev and I left
Whitehaven the crack of dawn is all I
can say for it no it was actually free
crack anyway we left because it was the
only weather window we had and we had to
leave firm whitehaven it shot the Seas
it was that bad the bevhunt attack with
the engine on because we needed to go
south but we had to go with it with the
way the waves were going and it was just
ridiculous but we were we both of us
were really really scared because with
the weather predictions were wrong what
if the day had not calmed down and we'd
been out there for hours you know we had
to go out in fact in conditions that
were a bit worse than we wanted because
as we went south and as we go south the
weather conditions calm now luckily the
weather forecasters actually gone with
the truth but honest to goodness that
doesn't stop here having EBG B's and as
for a stress-free lifestyle this is not
it
I have had my stress levels through
Rufus mornin luckily we're now on a
karma patch
[Music]
it's my fault I decided to call this
passage and wrong journey I have had
gale force 8 and we've been on a more in
and talk about rock and roll very very
unpleasant but hopefully the lock is now
open
I'm going to be able to go in
you
