previously on onboard lifestyle
we left catalina island to seek safe
harbor from a gale warning that was
issued for the region
we sailed through a sea of anchored
container ships in route for alameda's
bay we picked the perfect place to ride
out this wind event and finally resolve
our outboard issue
oh second pull
nice the crew breaks in the new engine
by exploring the canals on this lovely
bay
and we meet some local fishermen who
generously share their bounty my name's
brad and this is uh chris chris nice
meeting you guys okay so we can we have
one of these then they're all yours not
all of those we're glad to be a service
take care everybody signing out
before leaving alameda's bay we had a
few projects to complete we have been
working on our autopilot a bit at each
stop
we broke down the steering linkage to
prep it for the rudder sensor while we
were in ventura
we are on a mission aren't we teal we
are
here can you grab this
it's heavy do not drop it on me it may
kill me i got it got it i got it it
weighs like 15 pounds got it yep put
that on the table
this is crazy
we are now working
on our autopilot
that's part of that linkage
and that you hear is teal grunting
what's new
okay
actually that came out pretty smooth
just like i thought it would um
i just have to drill and tap uh the
rudder indicator into that
so that's my little project next it'll
be fine
so what's going on down here
are you done no
i'm just i'm falling
let's not have to do this ever again
every couple of years we'll have to do
it
no i'm serious
it pays off to have little teeny arms to
reach in there doesn't it
pays off for who
for me
the goal for alamedos is to make
electrical connections to power up the
unit you think you figured it out
are you just frustrated beyond
well i've narrowed it down
i've got it to this point right here
it's not working
i'm just checking all the connections
all the internal fuses are fine
there's no burn spots no corrosion
so i don't know i'm gonna i mean there's
power coming in
power is going in but it's not going out
to the display
so i've narrowed it down it goes in here
it goes up to the drive fine it's not
coming out of pin one
which goes to the display head
but i'm working on that next
i'm just cleaning this up a little a
little
so do we agree that this is kicking your
butt
we'll
have an answer for that in about two
minutes
i'm gonna try it again
it's so disappointing
i mean we didn't really want an
autopilot did we
no we love to hand steer all the time
yeah i do not want to hand steer a
thousand miles down
the coast
well we kind of did already but i don't
want to continue
so did we learn our lesson
yeah to read directions
okay
this is a 20
well probably 15 year old manual
that i didn't have i'd
download it from an old website that
doesn't exist anymore
there's no excuse there's 100 pages of
it i'm reading through this look at this
there's hundreds of pages what did you
read but did you read it though i read
certain pages
i finally read this one
this
what i'm
at least it looks like it's gonna work
so what was it
it requires a second
a secondary light duty power supply with
a one ampus
why is this so funny because you were
tearing everything apart
and you were like oh my god i went
through the process of elimination now
this unit looks good stop shaking it
you're gonna break it
the display unit i went through that
it's good
all i have to do is add a secondary
power supply
and we're golden and then we gotta
calibrate well calibrate but at least
getting it to turn on is step one
okay i'm gonna go do that
round two
there is our new
light duty power supply
complete with a cute little one amp fuse
so that's the secret huh that was the
missing missing link right here
so i'll be able to jump power straight
from this unit
fuse it
and power the head unit or the display
unit
okay i think i'm ready to try this again
do it
yeah let's do it tomorrow no okay
so i think progress and madness kind of
goes hand in hand because when teal is
doing something
he always unloads my cupboard and this
is the result i can't really complain
though because that means that something
is getting done
and it gives me an opportunity to kind
of reorganize and get things done but
teal is now
in my territory
what exactly are you doing
what exactly well
i'm mounting
the autopilot compass and gyro
and it says
it must be mounted as close to ship
center of vessel as low as possible
and you do the math that's this
locker right here you're covered
so of course it is that's where i'm
mounting it
it shouldn't be too bad actually you
know what
about done here here you go i just feel
like you're always encroaching into my
area that's not i don't encroach into
yours hey take a look at this look at
this
that is not that bad it's mounted to the
wall look at your locker you have look
at all this room
but it's mine
okay
one more connection
that's what you always say i'm close
then the electrical will be done
i'm kind of anxious to fire this up so
give me one minute well maybe two
or three or four
okay that's it for
all of the electrical connections now
i have power coming into the unit
from the fuse block it's switched
goes out
of here
to the drive
i now have my
low amp fuse going to my display so it
should be powered now
i've got that
all connected i've got the three sensors
which is my compass gyro and the rudder
indicator
they're all installed
i still have to finish the rudder
indicator that's gonna have to be a
project for uh probably the next stop
but my goal here was to fire this up and
make sure this and the display work
it's been a long time since this unit's
been on so
let's uh give it a go
okay it's go time tio is back at the
rudder making sure nothing goes crazy
and emma's gonna fire it up on the board
i'm gonna be here to make sure that the
display actually pops up so
emma go ahead and turn that on okay
this is uh exciting and nerve-wracking
because let's hope fingers crossed it
turns on
okay it's on hold on
hold on it's on it's on it's on okay
runner's not moving here
okay this is good okay don't touch it i
really want to touch it
okay we still need to the compass works
i know but look at the rudder shows all
the way over we need to do a factory
reset and then recalibrate but i can't
do that until we get that rudder
indicator on so so hurry up uh okay
that'll have to be the next stop
sorry we need a we need more steers
i don't want to be here it works that's
great high five
this just means that uh we're getting
closer we're getting closer can you just
do it today
we're leaving in the morning
next order of business compass
compass knows the drill well you know
what he knows
cement floors with a fold down table
and there's usually steel he's like oh
what's coming he's actually okay we're
just uh making sure that he is in good
health and making sure that all his
shots are um
up to date so just one more thing but it
was it was so funny though he walks in
here and he doesn't realize it for got a
good
minute or two and all of a sudden
his tail drops
mine would too
not the fold down table we just want to
make sure that he's okay
and he's gonna be healthy he is healthy
actually
what do you think compass
it's like i hate you guys
there he is
after three shots
he's been giving us the evil eye
for a while now
since we got home
poor guy
he should be fine after a day we'll be a
little sore
the things we do to keep him safe
healthy
and ready for travel
compass
compass
he's so mad at me
little does he know i'm giving him a
haircut and a bath tomorrow
the last project we wanted to accomplish
was to purchase our backup ground tackle
christmas came again
that's right in the form of ground
tackle gosh
life has sure changed for us
so we are so fortunate to be here and
have
wonderful viewers and they offered to
take us over and pick up some supplies
introduce yourselves i'm jim and this is
my wife linda hi
and they are they were former sailors
but now they are power voters which is
not a bad thing
you can get there faster than we can and
they helped us out i didn't have to
slept this a half a mile
they uh came picked us up and uh we went
and got it this is and i got cushions
you you have your toys and i have mine
so
one more project priorities
so thank you so much guys thank you so
much
well that looks good
almost done it's not what i want i'm
still missing this piece here
i'm on the hunt for it
once i get this piece i'll put the chain
stopper here i'll put a shot of chain
here
so that way we have a spare
anchor to deploy and uh
oh we'll be able to rig it up in 30
seconds
i'm just latching it here so it doesn't
move hopefully we won't need it but
well what i mean hopefully
i mean if we do though then we have it
but i'm saying i'm hopeful that we don't
need yeah me too do have to deploy a
second anchor
or peace of mind what happens if this
anchor gets fouled and we have to cut it
free then we have no way to anchor now
we do
okay
one more thing
done
off the list i still have a couple
components i still need to get
another mantis a shackle
get another chain stopper
and i'll rig that up right here
so this one's all set
okay i like it
departure day
oh
it's gonna be a
good sale heading over to
avalon we missed it because of um
circumstances well it was a full-blown
gale so it was nice to miss it yeah and
we need to get some parts so
now it's uh back to the island
and uh off to mexico off to mexico so
i'm all ready you guys ready yeah let's
do this let's go
[Music]
life is a winding road
no telling where it
driving through days and nights
won't stop for traffic lights
and i
i really want to know
[Music]
even if i'm falling down i will keep on
searching for my eyes
[Music]
you can say i lost my mind i will keep
on holding my head high
even if the sky is falling down
[Music]
here we are on the approach
to avalon on catalina island
we've got all the paragliders we've seen
those for the last five miles
we've dropped the main
and we're just flying the jib right now
winds are kind of swirling around the
end of this island
so we're catching a little bit here and
there we're only a mile out
so we're gonna power in and grab a
mooring
and we'll spend a couple days here
got a little bit of haze in the sky
still
calls for fog tomorrow morning
so i think this is the precursor to it
but overall beautiful day beautiful day
[Music]
is
