On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we leave San Simeon Bay and set sail for Morro Bay. We pick up a mooring ball and enjoy a few days dancing in the swift currents. Morro Bay was experiencing king tides so the debris was thick. Compass gets some beach time before the crew explores the iconic Morro Rock. Come back next week as we sail to San Luis Obispo Bay and enjoy the views of Avila Beach...see you then!

previously on onboard lifestyle
we time our departure from monterey to
land in san simeon early the next
morning
the 91.3 nautical mile leg was textbook
and included night shifts for the crew
we dropped the hook in san simeon and
enjoy a dinghy ride around the bay
we're gonna go adventuring today look
how beautiful this is
this is so cool
the next morning we wake up to a kelp
surprise what do we have going on
oh man
emma is bummed that the hearst castle is
closed
and lynn creates another amazing meal
for the crew
well we've spent two nights here in san
simeon
both mornings you wake up to a little
bit of fog
it burns off quick though
we'll have a sunny day
it's been
nice both nights here so far we'll spend
one more night here before heading to
morro bay
was a
kind of out of the southeast last night
but it was pleasant it's really light
it'll be clocking around
to the west northwest
a little bit later today with a little
stiffer breeze
but we have great protection here
tomorrow morning's our first day where
we're gonna have uh some good winds in
our favor
it'll be west northwest starting in the
morning
so we'll head out of here bright and
early tomorrow
towards morro bay
and uh
do our best to sail the entire way it's
about 25 miles from here
enjoyed this anchorage so far though
it's real pleasant
too bad
the hurst castle is up on the hill over
here
right up in the fog once it clears out
i'll try to get a shot of it
doing a little fishing just relaxing
lin's uh making breakfast right now
thought i'd poke my head out and just
kind of
observe
well
after
three days and three nights
[Music]
in sensimion it's time for us to go
it was just it was nice and relaxing
here the anchorage is pretty calm
and the views are pretty spectacular
when the fog breaks apart
but
it looks like we're
getting a little weather system
so it's time for us to head further
south wildcards about during effect from
1pm 783 am civic center on monday
i really enjoyed this place
it was just too bad that the hearst
castle uh is closed because they're
they're doing some road repair so we
weren't able to go up and visit
but other than that just
gorgeous
oh except for that kelp bed that was
tangled in our port sail drive
that was uh that was a bummer but we got
that loose
and i don't think i see any other kelp
beds
nearby
so we should be fine
i look into your eyes i see we're out of
time
i guess no one should play nobody
crossed the line
i guess we couldn't see somebody we
couldn't feel
[Music]
uh
[Music]
we are about
i don't know four miles from the
entrance to morro bay
and it's supposed to be a small craft
advisory at one o'clock today and it's
been absolutely light wind i know
we're just kind of drifting on down it
was only a 25 nautical mile day
but it's nice yeah it's really nice out
right now even though we can't really
see anything it's so soft with fog
we can barely even make out uh marl's
morro bay rock i think it's called
anyways so emma are just kind of hanging
out here
trying to just enjoy
a little bit of
the wave action up here yeah it's nice
emma is assuming her favorite position
which is lying down
so many flies
i know we took the flies from simeon
with us
me
[Music]
we'll be no heart goodbyes like our
civilized
[Music]
beyond our separate ways as we fade into
gray
but i still miss the way the way you
used to feel
there's a lot of current here so
[Music]
so overall how was the pickup
pretty smooth
i mean we got it right yeah
this current is pretty cool
are you doing some gardening
ball had a lot of creonic
there we go i feel better about that
nice and secure
look at that
coming out to say hi
okay good job
you'll have to grunt so much don't try
to it just happens oh this just feels so
nice yeah we're settled in now
on our mooring ball here in morro bay
and
the fog is lifted slightly yeah the
winds died down this is beautiful out
absolutely beautiful i'm excited to
explore this area because the last time
we completely skipped it yeah we just
rolled right by here so this is a treat
for us yeah so
i know that there's a birth sanctuary
around here there's tons of
sea otters all around us and some cute
little
cute little seaside town with shops and
restaurants you could hear all the
hustle and bustle and the boats
everywhere and i heard ruber has it that
the fishing is good here so maybe you
and emma will go out
we'll do what we can
you know here we are i'm i'm looking at
or piling number 14 right here
marker 14. it looks like it's 20 feet
from us
but it's actually quite a quite a ways
away you know we've a lot of the current
here in this uh bay is
phenomenal obviously it's rolling three
to four knots it seems like all the time
yeah yeah during slack is short it just
kind of flips you back and forth and
but the moorings are nice and secure
look at that rock look at that majestic
rock that beautiful thing i wish we were
able to hike up on it but yeah i think
you can just kind of
yeah it looks like there's trails around
it it looks a little steep
i would love to climb that mountain okay
yes
i'm sure you would your shoulder would
really hold up another night
time to explore tomorrow bay yeah it is
[Music]
you guys ready to go play on the beach
yep
i know compass is looking forward to it
compass
compass
[Music]
i think we're gonna need some dingy
wheels
yes we are pull hard
keep going
a little bit harder ready
compass is so excited
sexy legs
like beacons in the night
[Music]
come on in it's super nice
[Music]
i think it's so nice to just stretch our
legs on the speech it's so nice i think
we should do this every day while we're
here and i know compass is loving it
compass
[Music]
well we've been in morro bay
a couple days now
it's real interesting
these tides just rush in and out with
very little slack in between
feels like you're underway all the time
you look out the window and the water's
just rushing by i mean look at this
it's not water you'd want to swim in
looks dirty but it's just uh packed with
sea grass and sea foam
but boy it's pretty here
you don't want to fall in the water
right now
your only option is to
not swim back to the boat but swim to
the next boat
i mean this has got to be rushing two
knots right now
maybe a little more
you could hear the diesel heat in the
background here
it's been a little chilly
about i'd say low 50s at night but
very pleasant during the day
really nice
ora bay
we're uh looking for the next
weather window now
you know it's not that it's bad out
there just where we want wind in our
favor not on our face
it's coming
[Music]
so a couple times a day
i have to clear
the rudder and the sail drive so much
debris comes in and out
look at what i have to clear this
morning
pretty easy to do
just gotta knock it off it's caught up
i'm sure on the looks like that one's
caught on the rudder
okay let's get it out of here
look at this
there it goes
i mean look at this you have no chance
this one's drifting by
just gonna keep clearing it
[Music]
since we're in morro bay we had to hike
over and check out morro rock
and naively we thought that we'd have
the entire place to ourselves i don't
know what we were thinking
but we're here now and this place is
packed full of people
and rvers and surfers
that's okay at least we get to see the
rock from apart
morro rock is a special geological land
formation called a volcanic plug
moral rock is 581 feet tall or
177 meters and is one of the many plugs
that formed on a chain in this region
these plugs were formed between 23 to 27
million years ago when lava hardened in
an active volcano
the original volcano eroded away leaving
behind the harder rock of the plug
moral rock has been an important
navigational aid to mariners for
hundreds of years because of its
distinct shape and that it's the most
visible of the chain of nine peaks
portuguese explorer juan rodriguez
cabrillo named the rock el moro in 1542
in spanish moro means crown shaped hill
moral rock is sometimes referred to as
the gibraltar of the pacific
the morro bay skyline is dominated by
this geological figure along with the
three 450 foot or 137 meter stacks of
the decommissioned morro bay power plant
built in 1955 this plant produced
electricity by using natural gas as fuel
and could generate up to 650 megawatts
future plans for the dormant plant have
yet to be determined
well that was pretty cool that was cool
what do you think him that was awesome
that's so cool i did get a little scared
though there was one area that we were
walking through and it was really shaly
so it looks like all these rocks high
here the side of the the
this rock was like crumbling it was not
going to crumble i kind of wanted to run
past
i'm such a chicken
i know what do you say we go get
something to eat i'm starving hungry
smokey
what i do
we got perfect conditions to uh
hit the next part
so we're gonna go over to angela
yeah we're good
