On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we leave Monterey and have a perfect overnight passage to San Simeon Bay. This run was textbook and the entire crew had a good time. We spend a few days at anchor exploring and eating amazing food. Come back next week as we set sail for Morro Bay...see you then!

previously on onboard lifestyle we make
a planned stop in monterey it had almost
been a month off the dock so it was nice
to catch up on a few well needed chores
lynn and emma give basic a good
scrubbing both the top side
and the bottom
gracefully
we took full advantage of our time in
monterey and took in a few sites on our
short visit
monterey is a special place but our next
window opens up so it's time to head out
so we left the marina this morning
and
our thought is we don't want to just
head straight out
because it's about a 90 nautical mile
trip to san simeon that would put us at
anchor in the middle of the night
so we came out to the general anchorage
it was a big trip but about 0.8 nautical
miles
but here we are uh enjoying the last
little bit of sunshine looks like there
might be a little bit of fog in our near
future because we're going to pick up
the anchor and leave in about a half an
hour that'll time us out to pull into
san simeon
first daybreak
another
three miles will be halfway through this
trip
my goal was to be halfway through the
trip at nine o'clock tonight it's 7 42
so we're ahead of schedule
as it stands if we hold the pace we're
gonna
hit the anchorage and pitch black
so we drop the jib
try to slow the boat down we're still
doing mid fives
to
mid sixes
if this wind keeps up we'll have to uh
reef in the
main
and if we can't slow it down enough
we'll drop the main and just fly the jib
we want to time this for morning
we'll figure it out we have options
it's been a great run so far
the winds picked up just like it was
supposed
to it's right on
well
almost right on our butts
perfect nice run for the next
45 miles today
it's getting chilly though
[Applause]
i am all bundled and ready for my night
shift
oh my god it's freezing
oh but it's so nice we've had a pretty
good sale
and we're anticipating an even nicer one
overnight even though there's not going
to be much of a moon
uh we're not too concerned about that
but
it is cold you guys
and we're almost into southern
california what is the deal
when we dropped the main
we were in the high sevens
that's not what we want we don't want to
arrive at three
so we pulled the gym back out and
actually reefed it in quite a bit
we're still doing uh
five five and a half
but this is a much better
speed to uh time it for daylight
feels pretty balanced right now i think
we'll be pretty calm
if the wind dies down tonight we'll uh
raise the mate again
but we're good for now
it is now a little past midnight and i
am on my night shift
teal is uh
taking a little break and getting some
of these
emma's inside
but so far
this has been a pretty good sale
we dropped the main and we're just
flying
a little bit of the gym
so then we can slow our speed down
in order to get into
our nest
our next stop
during
the day versus coming in and anchoring
at night
the winds has been pretty good
and i feel like it's getting a little
bit warmer god it's just been cold
but
not too bad
i love this time
and it's crazy there's like absolutely
zero moons out right now
but the stars are just beautiful
it is
about 4 20
right now in the morning
and
of course
we're only about 15 miles
out from
dropping a hook
and the wind dies
so we're just kind of
coasting down
doing about three knots three three and
a half
and uh
yeah it's been um
it's been fun
i am a little tired though
feels tired a little bit too
our overnight passage went smooth and we
timed it correctly our float plan to not
run the engines overnight and enter
saint semion bay with visibility was for
an important reason
this stretch of coast is riddled with
live kelp beds
on our final approach we saw hundreds of
floating kelp islands and we had to be
alert as we entered the bay
lynn and i take the night shifts
splitting time at the helm by roughly
two hour intervals
if one of us gets tired after an hour
and a half
we switch if one of us could go longer
they stay the system works well and
gives us each roughly two to three
watches during a typical night passage
emma earns her keep during the day and
will slowly start taking night watches
as her confidence builds
[Music]
[Music]
about to see
the world in action
what we can be
like with no distractions we'll get away
this is what we waited for
take my hand we'll make it somehow
[Music]
be free
[Music]
what do we have going on
oh man it's a peaceful anchorage tell
this thing drifted in
it's wrapped around our sail drive and
our rudder i just want to get it clear
oh man
well they weren't messing around when
they said that they're
there are kelp beds around here you know
what's funny this isn't attached i think
it just drifted in
but it's heavy
oh yeah
i'm just cutting the ones three that are
wrapped around us
hopefully i get most of this
off the sail drive here
i'm starting to get it
uh
i think this kelp bed wants to just hang
out with us
well once it's free i think it'll drift
away
looks like you broke it free almost this
couple work
thank goodness for that uh
long push-pull
okay we're free at least now i gotta
clean it out of the
little bits and pieces
[Applause]
the fog finally lifted
yes it did so where are we going
i don't know let's tool around i'm
bringing a pole with me
you've struck out
i've caught two fish here
were they too small for you they were a
little too small
no they were awesome it was dinner last
night
if you can give me three then you'll
redeem yourself
[Music]
so our outboard is running a little
rough
it is about the last month now
tried all sorts of uh carburetor
cleaners i think it's time to uh break
it down and clean out the jets
works great at high rpms but low rpms
struggles
i think emma's volunteered to clean it
for you
oh come on emma you know you want to uh
we're gonna go adventuring today look
how beautiful this is
this is so cool
[Music]
[Applause]
just don't cast into those kelp beds
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
normally i would dare emma to get into
this water to the freezing cold
unfortunately
there's been a lot of sightings of great
white sharks so
i'm not gonna do that to you
would you do it
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
now that we're in san simeon i am super
excited to visit the hearst castle it is
a national historic landmark and it was
conceived by william randolphurst and
his architect julia morgan it was built
between 1919 through 1947.
i'm so excited
unfortunately due to road construction
the hearst castle is temporarily closed
after our overnight passage needless to
say i was so exhausted so i passed out
for the entire night but i feel so good
now and refreshed and nothing makes me
happier than cooking at anchor i mean
come on look at this this is just
amazing it's just
there's nothing better so i prepared for
this because you guys remember when teal
uh caught that cabazon back in pillar
point grab the net grab the net the big
net
[Music]
come on big boy
[Music]
oh my goodness
there we go
well we've had now four meals out of
that monster and the first night we did
fish tacos then we did fish and chips
and then i did an asian inspired braised
fish and this time i
baked it in parchment the night before
because i knew that i wanted to do
something
that everybody loves and that is fish
cakes
in the meantime now that the
fish cakes are done
i'm going to make a little tartar sauce
and don't kill me
i've never really been much of a tartar
sauce person but teal and emma love it
so
burger sauce i must make
i do
mayonnaise a little onion
um
i do like
[Music]
i do like
i can't use that one
i don't just
like using pickles i like using
sweet and spicy pickles
and obviously a little sugar
and
a little apple cider vinegar
and that's it oh lemon
we get the lemon
[Music]
get that acid in there
i think it really makes the tartar sauce
a little bit more lemon
perfect
and there you go homemade tartar sauce
well
i was hoping to cook outside today but
the flies are
this is just crazy
around here and as soon as i started
cooking they seemed to swarm so i had to
pull it inside
and with this fish fry um i like to just
do light
a mixture of light olive oil and canola
oil just because obviously with olive
oil you can't have high temperature
but i still like the flavor and i mix it
in with canola oil and i think that's a
good balance
the beauty of these fish cakes is that
because it's already pre-cooked
it's only going to be about three
minutes on each side and then we are
ready
okay
this looks
fabulous don't forget the tartar sauce
i'm not gonna forget the tartar sauce
wow
okay here we go
thank you cabazon
thank you
fisherman thank you chef
okay let's see
[Music]
yes
[Music]
the fish is still so fresh
