On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we get a short stretch of good weather and take full advantage. The hardtop is completed in a flurry of fast paced days filled with flinging epoxy, fairing compound, and barrier coat at our project. Linh treats us to an unforgettable breakfast onboard basik that left Emma temporarily full. Come back next week to see if the hardtop gets hoisted into position...see you then!

last week on onboard lifestyle
we did our final prep on the underside
of the hardtop
getting her ready for the barrier coat
we did a lot of fairing
and did i mention sanding oh the
glorious glorious
sanding sorry mads using the words
glorious glorious standing are common
words and phrases that can only be
trademarked if the person or company
seeking the trademark
can demonstrate that the phrase has
acquired a distinctive secondary meaning
apart from its original meaning lawyered
the weather was not cooperating with us
as we had to work hard between one storm
after another
getting paint on our project was a
milestone and it really lifted the
spirits of the crew
we flipped the hardtop so we could start
the last few steps to finish the top
side
the raised lip around the hard top had
to be shaped before the thickened epoxy
fillet could be applied
thick and epoxy
the edging will not only act as a rain
catch but it will also
add strength to the perimeter and give
us a nice grab rail at the same time
we use colloidal silica to form the
fillet so sanding it smooth took some
effort
once we were happy with the surface we
applied the first layer of fabric
a 10 ounce cloth was used for the first
application
anything heavier and it would have been
too difficult to form the material
around the tight profile
a reference mark was drawn directly to
the work surface
to help guide us with the lamination
with the fabric cut it was time to mix
up the epoxy and start rolling out the
cloth
the idea is to add multiple layers over
the edge treatment without adding
too much weight to the overall project
okay that feels good i got the glass all
the way around the perimeter
here you know i use that 10 ounce cloth
i needed it for the strength i want to
get that first layer nice and strong on
here
a little harder to bend around this
radius
but i feel good about it i did trim off
the
inside the field here because i'm going
to be sanding that out in the morning
and
putting a little bit of fairing on there
before the next layer
i'll leave this wild and i'll trim this
off with a razor and just sand it into
this radius
that'll make that seam just disappear
okay i feel good about this
looks nice it's gonna be a cold night
still feels gummy and we're losing light
fast so
i can't bag this up yet because it's
still just a little bit too tacky
i'll come uh down here in a couple hours
try to get some heat on this
but for now the sun
is just setting
it's time to head upstairs and have some
[Music]
dinner
[Music]
by the next morning the epoxy had cured
enough to sand it out
every layer of glass is sanded smooth
before the next layer of fabric is
applied
we started with an orbital sander on the
flat surfaces
using an 80 grit sanding net
sanding the field takes about an hour
and feels like it goes quickly
it's the hand sanding that feels
monotonous and never ending
we had run the cloth wild hanging from
the edge so that had to be removed first
the edge profile was sanded all by hand
to keep from burning through any of the
corners
you have to be careful and patient and
eventually the surface will soften
right up
[Music]
so i'm going to let you guys in on a
little secret about me
i am not much of a breakfast person
i don't really care for it it's not
something i crave i'm happy with
a cup of coffee or in this case matcha
tea
and maybe a little fruit and i'm good
but
emma really loves her breakfast
and you know her usual bacon
toast eggs well my morning
just got a little better i could smell
what do i smell in there bacon
so having said that i decided that i was
going to switch it up
and make a conscious effort to make
something healthier
and right now the traditional japanese
breakfast
looks so interesting to me i just
gravitate towards that it's just
it's beautiful and there's so many
healthy aspects of it
so this morning i'm going to be making
asa
gohan i think
i can't say it right but that's what i'm
gonna make today
[Music]
foreign
[Music]
so
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
do
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
so
[Music]
dang emma you killed it i
i don't think i can eat anymore that was
so good
are you sure you're full uh maybe
maybe maybe we have some bacon oh my god
emma
i'm kidding i'm kidding i'm kidding
i mean if we have something that'd be
good but no i'm just
i'm just kidding
[Music]
so
this is it guys this is the last layer
of glass
sorry i get distracted and i'll forget
how many pumps
this is the last layer that we're doing
and then after that
it is a little sanding
final coat and this baby is ready
bearing don't forget the fairing i said
barry
said sanding no it's going to be perfect
so we're not going to need any fairing
we have seed teal is so excited he
started
showing us some dance moves so watch out
[Music]
so
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
here we are the next morning everything
fired off overnight
looks like we have a little bit of blue
skies for most of the day
so we'll get some work done i better be
quick though the next round of storms
are hitting us tonight
gonna be uh just raining buckets here
tonight tomorrow
it's okay we'll get this all sanded out
maybe get some faring on the seams we
are getting so close to finishing this
up and getting our barrier coats down
i'm excited so i'll take advantage of
the weather while i have it
so let's get to work
and just like that trimmed off
boy everything's just starting to feel
like glass i just spent the last six
hours
sanding this whole field and hand
sanding
all the edges real happy with this
last thing i need to do now is just go
along these seams
and just there's a little bit
of a defect right where the two pieces
of cloth meet you can see it here
i'll go through and just put a skim coat
of fairing compound on that
well here we go just laid down all the
last little bit of fairing compound
didn't take much
just kind of went over the seams and
walked around and got all the little
nicks and cuts and any little
little chunks that i wasn't uh happy
with
[Music]
we are finally to the point where we
could start applying the coatings
three layers of interlux 2000e was
applied
alternating between gray and white
switching colors between coats makes
applying the barrier coat much
easier
[Music]
okay this is the second coat of barrier
coat and in between each coat
i sand it just lightly with 120 grit
and what it does is that barrier coat
kind of settles
into that fiberglass cloth and it gets
rid of that basket weave effect
boy it's almost gone each layer more and
more disappears
we're almost there one more layer and i
think this will be just
polished smooth then we'll be ready for
top coat
[Music]
if we were to apply white on white on
white
we may not get an even coating it's very
difficult to see
what you have coded and what you haven't
a bonus to the system
is that the darker gray also helps block
the sunlight from telegraphing through
the hard top
the painting goes quick because the
multi-part paint wants to skim
over fast so you have to keep moving
but overall the finish is what we
expected and the final top coats
will not be applied until the hard top
is actually installed
okay guys this is it
this thing of beauty and it really
is gorgeous this is the last time
you're gonna see this underneath our
boat because the next time
it's gonna be installed unless of course
teal finds another mistake
like what he's doing right now mistake
there's no mistake
just happy little accident
[Music]
this is so embarrassing i can't believe
my dad can dance better than me
