On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we dodge one weather system after another while still making big strides on our hardtop for our 435 catamaran SV ...

so what we have
here right now guys is teal
laying down that first layer of barrier
coat
i don't know why i'm i'm talking really
softly because i feel like one of those
hosts on a nature show but you have to
talk very soft
so you don't scare your prey or your
subject away
for this time if i talk too loud maybe t
will find an
imperfection and he'll stop what he's
doing and he'll start
sanding again
you know that's happened we've caught
him many times so do you guys remember
when teal noticed a couple imperfections
in the bootstrap and he said he would
live with it and
he didn't have time to go back and fix
it well he lied
the worst of it was right here for some
reason there's just this
spot of about six or eight feet right
through here
that i don't know what i did it doesn't
look bad at a glance it's under the boat
so
it doesn't bother me well i'm lying it
bothers me
i would love to redo it at this point
but i can't i got to keep moving
we got too much to do he's so lied
because
that's exactly what he did hey
what are you doing both out of the water
this is the time to fix it it only took
me a few minutes to fix this
really okay it took me a couple minutes
but it's done and you sleep much better
now right
i will sleep much better i am done i
promise you
we have been crazy busy leading up to
this day
it's been a wild few days of sanding and
fairing and laying that last layer of
cloth
and this time it's so satisfying because
this is the first of two layers of
barrier coat
and it's looking good
it's looking so good
so not only were we busy getting all
this prep for paint
we also were hit with some crazy weather
we had diablo winds the last two nights
it was wild
brutal night all night
stuff
so i clamped this down last night i knew
the wind was coming
i don't want this thing flying away
we're still under 150 pounds so
it's pretty light
looks like this wind's gonna pick up
and hold the rest of the egg
i mean look at this
we decided that we're going to do two
layers of barico at this point
before we flip it over and work on the
top side
there's a few reasons why we decided to
do this one being that we wanted to
protect
the uh the top from any uv
damage and having two layers of berry
coat will
kind of help with that we're not going
to actually do the
the final painting until we install it
onto our hard top because teal
is going to be doing a little bit more
glass work when he
seams the hard top into our main cabin
so it doesn't make sense for us to paint
it then sand it back down
we're in the home stretch baby so close
[Music]
[Music]
what teal's doing right now is he's
alternating between the gray and the
white
with the barrier coat just so we can see
if we've missed any spots
and this locks in that gray right teal
locking it in hopefully this is the last
coat and then we can
flip this baby over and assess the top
side
is it i hope so no i'm pretty sure it is
it's gonna look good we just have a
little bit more
um fine tuning or detail work
to do and then we can do the same thing
that we're doing on this side
but man it is looking good
[Music]
[Music]
we feel like such the baby in the yard
today
we have a 25 foot beam but check out
these other two
cats that are in the yard here's a
30-foot beam
and a 35-footer 35-foot beam on this one
[Music]
okay with a hard top sitting next to the
boat
i've now modified our structure
because as we flip it i need to make
room for that light soffit so everything
is raised by five and a half inches and
i put some little pads on here
just to keep it from marring up the
surface
so let's get this thing flipped
[Music]
okay here it is it's new home for a
little while
what's nice is we're almost done with
this we've already got three layers of
cloth on here
this is the first look i've had at our
rain catch
so i'll be able to clean this up today
and i need to
sand it smooth and add a an inside
cove to this
[Music]
okay i really have to pay attention to
the order of
the next few processes i want to put a
fillet on the inside of this combing
but if i did that now i wouldn't be able
to
router the radius on the top of this i'm
going to stick with this same radius
here but i'm going to put it both on
this edge and this
edge with the combing in there
i just would not have enough clearance
[Music]
so now what i need to do is touch sand
the inside of this now that i've cleaned
it up with my multi-tool get this all
nice and clean
i do have a little bit of epoxy work to
do on
this 1x2 i'll do that tonight
let that harden up and we'll router this
first thing in the morning
[Music]
and here's the epoxy work i need to do
i'll mix up some
thickened epoxy and i'm going to push it
into these curves
i want this to be really smooth when i
run that router over it
i don't want it skipping and turning so
we'll get that done tonight that way
i'll be all set to router in the morning
after this is all radiused i could run
my fillet
[Music]
days like this i feel so out of source
because it was so
busy us flipping that top and it just
turned out so good i'm just so happy
about that
and so we were just we were just busy
the day just kind of flew on by
but it's time for dinner so teal's down
there on his own and i snuck up here
to prep everything luckily i already
pre-made
our ribs earlier today in our pressure
cookers
that took a lot of the pressure off now
all i have to do is do the sides
and make the sauce for the ribs tonight
is going to be a little different i'm
going to switch it up a little bit
and i'm going to make korean barbecue
ribs
but instead of putting it over rice or
or something else i'm going to put it in
these little chinese buns
that will be kind of fun and we're going
to do an asian slaw with my
own vinaigrette so it should be really
nice
and easy dinner times are always really
fun for us
just because this is the time at the end
of the day that we just kind of sit down
enjoy a nice meal even though we're on
the hard yes it is a little bit harder
to do
but having that extra effort so that we
can just kind of decompress
really makes it all worthwhile
[Music]
i'm almost done with my sauce one of the
things is that you don't have time
because typically you marinate the
korean barbecue ribs for
24 hours to 48 hours is you make it into
a sauce you pre-cook the meat
and then you can pan fry it and it still
gives you that full flavor which is
[Music]
amazing
and with the slaw it's just shredded
cabbage
and some extra vegetables like carrots
and such and i always add my spring mix
in
and my vinaigrette the vinaigrette is
killer because i add
extra versailles chili i like it very
spicy
and with the with the chinese buns it
only takes 10 minutes to steam up
and you are all set so all together
it'll take about half an hour and we
will be ready to sit down and eat
hey guys dig in okay
[Music]
i'm making a mess
[Music]
teal is now doing a little touch sanding
from the epoxy work that we did
yesterday
and then at that point we can start
routering the edges
so that we can do our inside fillet
hey
so
okay the fillet is complete you can't
see it but there's 51
lineal feet of it coming all the way
around the perimeter here
and i've bagged it up took a little
extra caution
put extra clamps down bungee cords i
even
put weights all over this and that's for
good reason
the next storm going to be hitting us
tonight again it's just starting to
build
going to be torrential rains this time
not just the wind
they're talking 45 mile per hour winds
gusting to 60 in some areas hopefully we
don't get that
but it's coming from a different
direction it's coming out of the south
southeast
so it'll be hitting us on our nose so
we'll see maybe it'll feel more
comfortable i guess time will tell
everybody's trying to batten their boats
down we're in good shape we've already
prepared
so we're just gonna ride this one out
inside
sounds like it's coming quick though
[Music]
