On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we put Linh to work on her birthday, and make progress on our hardtop project for our 435 catamaran SV basik. We direct our attention to the edge detail and light soffit laminations. Come back next week to see our progress...see you then!

welcome back to onboard lifestyle

well here we are under the bridge deck

of sv basic

working on the hardtop project

you know it's been a couple days of

wind and rain and just real cold

temperatures

so it slowed down our progress a bit but

not much

you know it's the biggest thing it's

hard to get motivated in the mornings to

get down here

and the epoxy takes a little longer to

cure but besides that we're

plugging along nicely we've been working

on laminations

inside of the lights off it and we

started

the edge detail around the hardtop

it was a little difficult to get the

first piece or two on but i've been

working with lynn

and we have a system down now and it's

working out real smooth so we're going

to

try to finish up getting the rest of the

material down today

so we've really been concentrating last

couple days of putting laminations

inside of the light soffit this will be

a walking surface to access the boom

and flake the sail so we're basically

turning the soffit into

a structural beam just a big fiberglass

beam

we're going to add probably two more

layers in here and then start the

laminations on the exterior i mean it's

already feeling

amazingly stiff but we got a ways to go

i left the outside here raw because once

this nosing is on

we'll be able to bull nose it and run

glass cloth over the nosing

across the deck and up the side of the

soffit once we get the lid on we'll be

able to do one more layer

up and over the top and maybe a second

and third

we'll see how things are stiffening up

at that point you know it's a balancing

act with with this hard top we could

just keep adding glass

over glass over glass and make this

bulletproof but

weight is an issue and so at some point

we're going to have to stop

and accept the stiffness

well i'm going to get lynn down here to

help me with this nosing it's sure

easier with two people doing the bends

and epoxying these in

i feel kind of bad though it's her

birthday today so i'll get everything

prepared

and we'll get here down here we'll bust

us out

and then we'll uh take it easy the rest

of the day and enjoy some food and fun

okay the first thing i want to do is

prepare the surface for the edging we

put on yesterday

i'll get all the clamps off sand this

nice and smooth

because there is a little bit of gap

here i want to fill with

thickened epoxy just like i did over

here

this has already been sanded and filled

that way i'll be able to run my router

along this nice and smoothly

and layer that glass cloth right over it

so let's get all this prepared

can't feel real good about this

everything just flushed out perfectly

so we'll get working on this here got

two pieces

already lined up got a chance to rip

these the other day

so they're really uniform

now what i want to do is to scuff the

surface it's got kind of this

glossy surface on it and by scuffing it

boy that epoxy just grabs it

just grabs it nicely

okay i'm all ready for her so i called

in

the birthday girl so

cold down here hey at least i put a

couple heaters out here

only for the epoxy is not for me just

for my benefit

twist went around all right

let's get going cause i don't want to be

down here all day it's my birthday

i mean i don't mind but come on

give me one day off

all right so this is where the magic

happens

magic this is when teal figures out how

to

line everything up and curve the corners

so that we can bend them with zero waste

pretty cool okay go

magic i tell you obviously with my brawn

and his skills you can do anything

crazy

this is a pretty tight radius and the

tighter the radius the more

kerfs i put in on this one here

i'm going every 5 16 of an inch

and that did a pretty good job bending

that around

you want to get down into the thing

okay it's kind of a chilly day i don't

want to risk snapping this

i know you would so i'm gonna just put a

little heat on it

just makes it a little more pliable

okay we transferred it up on top of the

table threw a couple clamps on it

and we're gonna let this cool off and

that'll hold its shape

and this my friends is the magic

the magic well i gotta call it something

it's frosting on your cake it's funny

okay so here's the thing of a teal

he's really good at working with thick

and epoxy

but ask him to cross the cake that's

another shot right there

but get him to frost the cake and it

looks like a five-year-old did it

with a fork you haven't seen your cake

yet today

that's what i'm afraid of

it's my mom's birthday so while she's

out on a walk we're gonna make her a

cake from scratch

it's like we're just gonna make it out

of a box but we're gonna cover it

in love just kidding frosting

it's kind of funny emma and teal are not

very subtle when they want to

surprise me and do something nice

obviously it's my

birthday so they suggested that

compasses i go for a long long walk

obviously they're doing something but

they think they're pretty sneaky okay we

don't have much time

so we've laid out all the tools

we need and all the ingredients we need

so let's get to work okay the first

thing we do is preheat the oven 350

degrees

it's nice to just kind of get out and

enjoy

the sunshine and compass is not

complaining

you're going to mix the ingredients and

i'm going to grease the pan okay

got it got it okay first crack three

eggs into your bowl

got it

this is really bad

one-third cup of oil okay

one cup of water

so nice to just stretch your legs

now the cake mix

did you blend it for two minutes yeah

you did not get back there one minute

one more minute

i greased the pan now i'm flowering it

oh my goodness it says lightly

flower it i'm working

it's all or none i'm sorry

[Laughter]

oh my god is this right i thought i

would feel bad about

getting a year older but i don't

you know every year you learn something

new about yourself

and learn to appreciate what you do have

dump it right in the center don't get it

on the edge at all

i won't

i think oh hot

i think that's gonna be delicious you

know all right

i'm so excited compass and i have been

walking and just kind of enjoying the

scenery for about an hour and a half

so i think it's enough time that i've

left emma and teal alone

to start heading back plus i noticed

that there's

been a few hawks just circling around an

eyeballing compass

probably not the safest thing poor guy

he could be someone's lunch it's been 35

minutes in the oven so it's time to take

it out

open that up

oh this is good

hot

wow

look we did good yeah okay start

cleaning up

she's gonna be back any minute now get

these hatches open oh yeah it smells so

good in here

okay i'm gonna put this outside to cool

somewhere no i can't do that the birds

laid it

i'm gonna put it in the sail locker okay

start cleaning the dishes

okay it's been about two hours

cake is nice and cool lynn just jumped

in the shower so

emm and i have a little window to get

this frosting down

okay time to flip it you want me to do

it i'll do this you sure

yeah okay scared me after you

all the muscles you used try there

i'm standing back that's all you oh

okay hey you got it yeah

ta-da it looks beautiful

let's put some frosting on us before

anybody sees it

make it look pretty and

she hurry everything look so pretty and

super like easy

i know oh she'll love this she better

oh my goodness we gotta make it look

smoother okay

okay i'm ready

you ready i'm ready now it's just a

matter of

pushing this into place and clamping it

down

easy peasy lemon squeezy

in my defense there's no defense that's

just what it is

it is what it is okay at least we're

having fun

just don't blame me if it's crooked

i'm just gonna let him do this

so here it is everything is in we've got

clamps everywhere

weights leaning on the radiuses

support sticks anything to hold this in

the right plane

but you know what i feel good about this

everything just uh

looks nice and level we'll let this fire

off tonight

it was a big day of work what do you

think birthday girl

was that fun or what happy birthday fun

i'm so happy actually no i am

let's uh your glass is a little empty

right here it's been empty

well let's go upstairs i'll go bust open

a bottle

oh this is just beautiful thank you guys

this is what you guys have been planning

all day

yeah all right

okay the beginning of each day

i like to get another layer down on the

inside of this

light soften and every day

it gets a little bit stronger

we're putting on 10 ounces at a time we

have

two layers in so far

with a few left

not too worried about making this look

pretty inside here but i'll do my best

i mean none of this will show it's all

interior

still makes me feel good though when it

lays down flat

well here's where we stand look at this

boy that just feels like

glass right now all these curves

have been just filled 100 with thickened

epoxy

sanded out

here was the new one we just did boy

just feeling good this one over here was

a little different

i had to bend it the opposite direction

and curve it but to the touch i can't

even feel those curves

that's all been sanded out smooth and

we're getting there

next couple days i'm gonna start working

on bull nosing this

and getting these glass laminations on

let's start working on

the cap for our lights off it oh we got

a lot to do

and uh take advantage of this good

weather

right now it looks like we're gonna have

at least nine ten days

of no rain

so we should be very productive

that's the stove
