so

last week we hauled out and that was

super exciting

we were all so motivated to just kind of

hit the ground running because the

weather was

nice it was hot and sunny

and you know we got a lot of projects

done

already you know sanding out the cockpit

after all that peeling paint

it was just very satisfying even

yesterday it was nice

and we went to the store and got all the

wood for the temporary framework for the

hard top

so we are at a lumber yard right now

because we need to pick up the wood to

build

the structure for our hard top and we're

so lucky because we have a patron that

is actually in the yard as well and they

were kind enough to

lend us their truck

we're all loaded up let's go

but overnight the weather temperatures

dropped i mean it dropped to 49 degrees

that is so cold and for me

i am not motivated when the weather is

cold it's just

hard for me to get going and i just

wanna snuggle up

on the couch and just read a book and do

nothing

i mean literally this is my third cup of

hot water i'm just trying to warm myself

up

emma even put on pants which is rare for

this one

not for long the sun is out right now

and teal's already

he's been outside kind of mapping out um

the groundwork and he's just working on

that

for the hardtop and i know that he needs

my help

i really don't want to go out there but

you know

it this is the reason why we're out on

the hard and so i just gotta

suck it up and just get going

well this is exciting finally starting

the hard top this will be a big project

and

totally pumped i know lynn's not real

motivated

it was a little chilly this morning but

the sun's out it's getting warm fast i'm

sure she'll be out here soon

doing as much as i can doing all the

layout for this temporary structure

i had planned on building it today but

weather is going to be an issue

there's a unusual weather event that's

happening

they're talking 35 to 45 with gusts to

65

tonight and tomorrow so i don't think

it's going to be the smartest idea to

build a temporary structure

with that kind of weather condition

so i'll do as much as i can pre-cut

everything that i can drill as much as i

can do all the layout but i also have to

prepare the boat

for this uh this extreme wind that's

gonna hit we'll have to

tear this the mini down we're actually

gonna strip

the mainsail off if there's a potential

of

high winds like that i want to make sure

we have less windage as possible we are

on stilts right now

we're on stands so i want to make sure

that

we do everything we can to protect our

boat we do need the mainsail off

regardless

it is going to be in the way for

building a hardtop so i'll just take it

off a little earlier than i anticipated

well i need the girls help for that that

mainsail is pretty heavy so we'll uh

jump on that one uh after they warm up

meantime i'll continue to lay out

everything's lining up

it's going to be interesting

hmm there she is been hiding inside all

morning

all right it's nice out feeling kind of

warm

maybe i'll take a jacket off he won't

notice

he's too busy doing his thing i think i

don't see you taking your jacket off

you've been complaining it's too cold

it's actually kind of hot out here

i'll just pretend he didn't notice that

you ready i'm ready

okay oh i noticed okay

it's getting kind of warm let's see how

long she lasts

i'm sweating with a t-shirt and she's

got i don't know probably i'm guessing

three more layers on there

okay how long can i do this because i

need to take another jacket off

why did i wear that let's see how long

she laughs

okay i just gotta do it well

here it comes i know she's peeling a

layer off

trying to be sneaky yep there it goes

oh she's got a sweatshirt on that's not

gonna last

i should be fine by now we'll see

so before we take down the main we're

going to take some hard measurements

because

while this is off i'm going to build the

stack pack

and i hate to admit it but it's starting

to get warm

i told you i hate being wrong

so hold on it's getting warm

then overall to the top i think we go

next thing we're doing is pulling all

the battens out of the batten pockets

i really like our tides track

runs real smooth it's i'm i've seen its

day it's getting old but it's still

running just as smooth as the day it was

installed

it's that easy pull one pin

and we can remove the sail

okay we're ready to drop this thing

[Music]

that was easy

so this hardtop we're going to build

it's going to be pretty substantial it's

going to be 10 feet by 12 feet

roughly it's going to be made with a

polypropylene

honeycomb composite it's going to take

about five 4x8 panels

to construct it but to hold this in the

right shape i have to build

a temporary structure in the cockpit

and that way i could bend the panels

over and get the

correct shape the idea is to use this

material

it's really lightweight it's just a one

by two spruce

and i'm going to form this all out of

that i want to keep it light because i

want to build the structure up there

get the right shape and then bring it

down here and do all the work

under the bridge deck in protection well

that's the idea at least

and we may tweak some of the design a

little bit

and maybe round a corner here or there

but by building this

temporary structure first it's going to

give us a good idea of what it's going

to look like

okay we have the mainsail removed flaked

and stowed

getting closer to starting this hardtop

project i'm just itching to do it

i was a little nervous because of the

wind tonight

it doesn't feel like it's going to

happen for some reason it's just been

eerily calm most of the day

got a little breeze now but nothing

major i double checked

with the national weather service and

they actually increased it to 55 to 70

knot

so i guess we'll see doesn't feel like

it's going to happen

but it is a little early fingers crossed

well it's nine o'clock at night

winds are starting to ramp up a little

bit more

it's blowing 25 gusting to about 35

right now we're doing pretty good

we're shaming and shaking a little but

i'll admit it's a little unnerving we're

on stands

and the yard guys set us up pretty good

i feel safe how they set us up but

you know yeah you'll wonder what's going

to happen if this wind continues to

to build you know i mostly

worry about these monohulls that are on

the north side of us

if one of them goes they're going to

domino all the way into us

but we're doing good

the height of the storm is still about

four or five hours away

supposed to pick up another 20 to 30

miles an hour wind

we'll see how it goes

no so that

is the sound of disappointment this is

so hilarious teal was so excited for

this

this wind event that he went out every

couple hours

to get some great footage and track

the the progression of the storm by the

time

it peaked at 15 60 miles per hour

he was out there ready to get the best

of the storm and instead of

taking great footage he inadvertently

hits the wrong button

and takes a hundred creepy pictures of

himself

it was like a scene out of the blair

witch project it was so hilarious

hey technology's tough this is not the

first time he's done that

he thinks he took a a great segment or

something and instead it's just

pictures made me so mad

i'm still reeling from that but you

gotta admit that storm

it was interesting it was not a natural

feeling because we're not supposed to be

on stilts and jacks it's just

the boat shook all night i don't think

we got any sleep

i got sleep what are you guys talking

about no she sleeps through everything

it took about two days for that wind to

die down

but nice light breeze today sun's out

it's time to get this thing assembled

we've pre-cut all of our pieces

let's go everything's all set lynn's

anxious to get this up

so let's do this one at a time yeah

so we're going to clamp these in place

so that we can fasten it to the cabin

it'll follow the curvature

now that we're on layout

[Music]

i'm going to screw these straight

to the coach roof i'm not too worried

about putting holes up there

because this hardtops gonna be glassed

in

way past this all the way to this

bulkhead here so this will be all ground

out

and filled in

well this feels massive up here

through a little canvas up here just to

get an idea of how much shade

it's going to create it's going to be

nice

you know we've got a long way to go on

this this is just

a structure so i could get this

curvature

of the coach roof transitioned into a

flat

back here because i want to keep this

flat for solar panels

we had to raise everything six inches in

the back

to keep the water shedding forward

there's gonna be a raised lip around

this whole perimeter

so that water won't be dripping off

it'll be directing it forward

we actually have an option to put a

water catch into this corner here

we'll put a filter into a jerry can

that'll be down the road

so a lot of other things are going to

happen like obviously

we need to do a big cut out here over

the helm

and have a raised portion

that will be a phase two of this top

there's going to be plenty of posts

we're going to post down in two

positions

on each side this whole structure up

here

is gonna be removed and we're gonna have

three posts coming down so we'll have a

total of seven posts uh supporting this

roof

you know this is a big big spanning area

so it's gonna take a lot more than that

there's gonna be some internal

metal as well to help carry the load but

the big thing will be this

i'm going to build a structural soffit

that comes around and u-shapes around

this

whole top and that's going to be

the big load bearer it's gonna be fun

it's gonna be a ton of work and this is

just the beginning

i'm really excited to start building the

hardtop this project is gonna be
