welcome back to sv basic
well here we are on the hard again
i know it feels like we were just pulled
out but it's been over 14 months we were
due for a haul
out and while we're on the hard we're
going to take advantage of it we're
going to get some
projects done some are pretty major
actually and we'll go over those here in
a little bit
first i want to take a look at the paint
while you're on the heart it's a good
chance to really look close to see how
these paints are performing and we use
quite a bit of different products
so let's take a close look at each of
these products
and see how they performed some were
hits some were misses
so let's dive into this
the first thing i want to talk about is
our bottom paint
we use the interlux fiberglass bottom
coat aqua
it's not a blade of paint it's a hard
scrubbable paint
and we put three coats on and
i could not be happier it's gonna be a
big day for us
three days till splash taped off the
water line here
we're putting bottom paint on it's gonna
be the first coat of three
dagger boards are hanging they're ready
for the same
application lin's been over here
stirring
paint day paint days always make her
happy
she'll be dancing here soon i'm sure we
have
zero barnacle growth we did have a
little bit of
scum and light grasses grow on this
but it sloughed right off as soon as we
pulled out of the water
[Music]
but overall i swear by this product
i think it performed amazing
okay the next paint i want to talk about
[Music]
is our top coat and our bootstrap
all right so you see this smile this is
a happy person right here because today
is p day and i mean p meaning paint day
[Music]
it is nice and dry so we went out this
morning wiped everything down
and teal has been taping the boot stripe
i'm tired of this already
[Music]
so teal has started the first coat
of the boot stripe and i gotta admit
it's looking good
is our top coat and our bootstrap
we use interlux brightside it's a single
part enamel
it's a polyurethane and everything above
the water line
did amazing everything close to the
waterline
i feel performed marginal
and why i say that is this bootstrap
looks
perfect out here this is on the sunny
side
as you walk around the bootstrap looks
great
but as soon as you get into the shade of
the bridge deck which is like right here
look what happens
for some reason look at this enamel
it failed
it's really interesting because it just
happens
from the shade of the bridge deck from
here to here
and it looks perfect all the way around
the rest of the boat
i did the same thing on this hole look
at this
you draw a line straight down to the
shade of the bridge deck
and the bootstrap failed
[Music]
as soon as you get to this point right
here where it's unshaded
[Music]
it's perfect all the way around
so i have two theories of why the
bootstrap
failed in just the shaded areas the
first is
when we originally painted this
bootstripe
sun was curing the rest of the boat
faster than in the shaded areas
and it was just enough uh cure out here
that it didn't fail and not enough cure
in here that it did fail
it's tough to think because that was
two two and a half weeks before we
launched you think it would have enough
time to cure
so that's one theory the other theory is
that
as water splashes onto the bootstrap
in the sunny areas it evaporates off and
dries
in the shaded area it tends to be wet
longer
so this is a much wetter area right in
here
so one of those things i believe is
happening i'm not sure which one
but we definitely need to correct it
the next paint i want to talk about is
the paint we put on
the bridge tech actually we didn't even
put a paint on the bridge deck
we only primered it we used the interlux
inner protect
2000 e it's an epoxy primer
multi-part and it just performed amazing
this is a shaded area so we thought
we weren't going to put a top coat on
here and i don't believe i ever will
this has been 14 months and it looks
like the day we painted it
so if anything we'll put one more coat
on while we're out of the water or just
touch up some of the areas
but totally thrilled with this product
[Music]
looking at this bridge deck brings back
a lot of memories
we did this in port townsend up in
washington state
and the amount of work that went into
this was crazy
the bridge deck this bridge deck is my
kryptonite
it has been a ton of work
i think i'm to a good point to put a
barrier coat down
[Music]
i actually am pretty happy with it it
looks looks real good
hey
i thought we deserve a little
celebratory drink
i'll take that
so what do you think well first good job
man this was a lot of work but oh my
gosh it looks so good
okay we use a different product on our
sail drives
it was the interlux trilox 33
we put on three coats and you know what
we have
zero growth on the sail drives and
everything looks like it was protected
nicely
i didn't notice that it is sloughing off
and will require extra couple coats
but very happy with the performance
so transducer paint that was the only
paint that we used that was not an
interluxe product
we were hauled out up in port townsend i
didn't have any
transducer paint and the neighboring
boat
just happened to have a little extra
walked over said hey do you need any
transducer paint
i said i certainly do i put it on
and i wish i didn't it failed
didn't do well so that is one thing i
really want to look at
make sure we get a product that's
compatible with our transducer
that's going to protect those
transducers i noticed
over the past month we were getting
intermittent signals on our
depth soundings and i know why now
too much growth so that'll be a product
that
we're really going to look into and get
the right product on sc basic
full disclaimer we are not sponsored by
interlux paints we just
love their product but interlocks if you
are watching
call me
the worst paint fail that we had
actually happened above the water line
it happened in the cockpit you know
everywhere we used
the interlux interprotect 2000e as a
primer
and then used a bright side top coat
the paints performed amazing but
in the cockpit we used something else we
painted it eight years ago
and we used interlux pre-coat
[Music]
pre-coat on top of epoxy i don't believe
is the right thing to do and over time
it showed the paint failed terribly
let's go up there and take a look at it
[Music]
frankly it's been an embarrassment
everywhere we had the right primer on
the decks
everything's this looks great but down
here from this edge
all the way around the perimeter of the
cockpit look at this
[Music]
look what has happened cracking and
crazing and chipping
it's been getting worse and worse you
know at a glance you don't see it
but you look real close look at these
stairs
paint has 100 failed look at this
and now it's coming apart and these
little flakes
have been migrating into the cabin
and we have to stay on it every day
don't we late i don't even want to talk
about it
this is something that is driving me
crazy
okay it's just it's everywhere and it's
not
easy to sweep up or clean up
it sticks on everything it does not
stick
yes hang on hold still stop stop you got
some pain on you
is that what you're talking about yes
it's so
gross we gotta get this thing addressed
and we will that's gonna be i think our
first project we're waiting for
materials to come in for the hard top
i think i'm gonna jump on this cockpit
and make the family happy what do you
think yes yeah
yes a hundred times yes
all right guys today is the day i am so
pumped for this project this has been a
year in the making and we're finally in
an area
that the weather will permit us to paint
so
today we're going to strip all the
hardware off
in the cockpit and start sanding i'm
going to be standing the heck
out of this cockpit i don't care if it
takes us all night
it's going to happen we're going to get
all these nasty things it's gonna take
more than one night
yes but anyways i don't care and so now
i'm gonna start picking this is like a
hangnail that teal won't let me pull
because she's been wanting to pull this
off for a month and i said just leave it
just let it
like does that feel good feels so good
i don't care now that means that there's
there's no going back
because that means right you've done it
now
now we have to do it give me the chisel
chisel
trying to get to work guys
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
okay well this looks real good we've
taken off enough
to get the cockpit done all the areas
that need attention
we've stripped it all down
[Music]
when we get to the hard top we'll be
taking the electronics off
uh the winches will come off the bags
the winch handle holder because i'll be
blending that in
but for now we have taken off plenty
to get started now the fun part
sanding
so
well after sanding on this cockpit now
for two days
i've determined that the paint did not
fail i did
and what i mean is i painted this
cockpit eight years ago i just didn't
have the proper
preparation under the paint
the staircase was built out of epoxy
i didn't clean the blush off enough and
so the fairing compound
failed under the paint i've
fared all that out and got all that
loose faring out of there
and starting to prepare the surface
getting ready for the new paint
other things that i did wrong was i put
two coats of paint
in this cockpit i didn't scuff between
paints and that's what
most of that flaking was coming from was
the two layers didn't bond to each other
we've got all that cleaned out of here
we're down to good solid paint
and feel real good about it we're not
tracking any more flakes
into the into the cabin you know
it's the preparation behind the scenes
and under the paint that
that is most important and i've learned
that over the years
my painting skills are getting better
and better and i cannot wait
to have a nice new clean cockpit we'll
be putting down a barrier coat
a multi-part epoxy coating on here and
applying a top coat but i'm gonna call
it for today
it's almost time for dinner gotta get
cleaned up
[Music]
all right guys even though we are on the
heart
our rule is at the end of the day we
clean everything up and we have a family
meal
who says you can't eat well on the hard
right
yeah no arguments anyways guys if you
