well here we are
leaving bodega bay that's not fog you
see in the background
that's wildfire smoke the aqi's been in
the
150 to 170 range here
it's supposed to start lightening up in
the next day or so
so it's our window to make the next jump
we've been camped out inside the boat
just trying to get some fresh air
but we can't just camp out forever looks
like uh this is our best window to
to make a run for it so off to
drake's bay this channel is interesting
it's just a few feet deep right outside
the channel
it's nice and deep in here we're at 20
feet it's well marked
but i'm sure people get grounded in here
all the time
just when we thought that we would be
out of the fog we had all
of this smoke and haze cover it's like
it's so eerie because not only can we
not really see
anything but the air quality
is so bad you can feel it in your lungs
and your throat it just burns
but you know i mean that's what we have
to do we just have to just keep pushing
forward
and kind of enjoy what we can today
i have already seen i'd have to say
about six or seven humpbacks one came
up pretty close to us so that was pretty
cool but they're kind of steering clear
of us
and we're hoping to catch some fish but
you know you never know
the wind is just not there
[Music]
at one point during the passage a
talented warbler hung out with us for
about an hour it had to be one of the
cutest birds i have ever seen
although warblers are tiny their
brightly colored feathers make them
stand out as they flip from branch to
branch hunting insects
there are over 50 species of warblers in
the united states and canada
but most warblers don't visit backyards
because they aren't feeder birds and
typically stick to forested areas
so it's kind of weird that a warbler
landed on her boat five miles offshore
i think it must have been really
disoriented from all the wildfire smoke
[Music]
do
well it's been a nice day with the
exception of the air quality
saw a lot of wildlife it's kind of fun
tons of whales amazing how many whales
we've seen
all humpbacks today
point raise right here you can see it
right through the
smoke through the haze believe it or not
it's only a mile and a half away and we
could
barely barely see it we're going to
swing wide around this
and be dropping a hook in drake's bay
yeah less than an hour
wakes your feeling in your throat though
seems like it's getting worse it's
supposed to be getting better
hopefully it clears out a little
[Music]
hmm
[Music]
so how does it feel to drop anchor in
daylight hours
it feels warm feels nice not quite
but there is a nice breeze even though
it's all still smoky and hazy
it's way better than it was though
i think i'm gonna like it
beautiful anchorage
so we're finally at anchor and
it's it's nice to come into an anchorage
in the daylight i know so it's
comfortable
it's not warm i mean it's warmer don't
be
fooled by this this kid right here i
it's still chilly out here it's still
like in the low 60s with the with the
wind factor too but
she never gets cold so we can't use her
as a gauge
anyway so here we are in drake's bay fun
fact
drake's bay was first visited by sir
francis drake in 1579 during his famous
single expedition
circumnavigation of the world drake's
bay's broad entrance and good protection
from northwesterly winds made this
an ideal anchorage for heavy vessels
under cell power alone
and it's just really nice i mean it has
a nice
breeze and we're the only people here
we are the only people here we're
probably going to just
spend one night here and then head into
sausalito and drop a hook in richardson
bay
so our time in
bodega bay was bittersweet
you know we got there we had these plans
to
do a lot of exploring and hang out and
see the sights
but well we did get one good hike in up
to bodega head but by the time we got
back
the smoke was rolling in and for the
next few days
it was just hiding out inside the boat
and trying to keep the boat clean no i'm
not filming in sepia mode
this is noon
and it feels just smoky and
i mean look at these decks
we had soot and ash and
all sorts of wildfire debris just coming
down on us for
three days straight the skies were just
eerie
just spooky and
we just camped out inside unfortunately
we didn't get to see much of bodega bay
but
the weather window for us to leave
happened so we had to make a run for it
well we left drake's bay
early this morning before daybreak
it was a nice night at anchor very calm
protected anchorage huge anchorage
really enjoyed it actually we had to
leave early
because of the tides we're about 27
miles from the golden gate bridge
and the currents coming through there
think about it the san joaquin river
system the sacramento river system
all come out with all that volume of
water in the bay they have to funnel out
under the golden gate
the current there is going to be today i
checked 2.7 to 3.1
depending on where we uh
travel through but i don't want that in
our face i want it running with us
and that's why we left early i want to
take advantage of uh
the current as we go under the golden
gate bridge
it's gonna be tight though if anything
we'll hit the tail end of it and it'll
be slack
but at least we won't be fighting it
[Music]
no wind just like every other morning
it's been uh
really calm this stretch and wind
usually picks up later in the morning to
early afternoon
we may be in by then hopefully not i
want to get these sails up
i want to make some time and take
advantage of these tides look at this
still a little bit of haze from the
wildfires
but much better today you could just
feel it in the back of your throat
it's uh starting to clear out just like
they said it would
feels good
well we haven't got our wind yet
[Music]
but we are catching glimpses of the
golden gate bridge that's a milestone
for us
out here's the infamous potato patch so
we're cutting
on the inside through the bonita channel
[Music]
we are probably only six seven miles
from uh
going under the bridge we're getting
there we're just cruising on uh
one engine right now wind hasn't hit us
so
just clipping along at five knots just
being real efficient with the fuel
we're burning at this speed about .5
gallons per hour
wish there was some wind but you know
this happens
early in the morning we could have left
later in the afternoon
but everybody's anxious to get into the
bay
so we decided just to gamble and maybe
hit no wind and
end up having to power a little bit but
nobody's complaining we can feel the
weather getting warmer already
still a lot of uh thick smoke in the air
but definitely better than yesterday
[Music]
this is so cool we're finally in the san
francisco bay and there's the golden
gate bridge
there's a bunch of cool islands here too
treasure island angel island and best of
all
alcatraz
you can call me crazy you can call me
sentimental but
i just love this approach
going underneath the golden gate bridge
it just makes me feel like we were 20
again
when the first time i sailed under here
with teal
it's just an amazing feeling it's
to me it feels like this is just the
beginning of
our cruising trip it's only going to get
better from here
you know the first part of it has been
you know kind of brutal
but you know it just makes us appreciate
these moments
that much more
[Music]
so we're finally eating outside in the
cockpit this
this year it feels like i don't i can't
remember the last time at sunset
so i feel so accomplished this glowing
orb in the sky is confusing
yeah we're in warmer conditions the sky
is blue life's not too bad
and we could breathe yep we can breathe
it's taco tuesday so
you know cheers you guys yeah cheers
this
is a great evening at anchor in
sausalito
