okay we left
eureka two hours ago this is
dead calm and foggy wind should pick up
here in a couple hours
just bizarre it's hard to tell where the
water ends
and the sky begins the sun's just
peeking out
and look at this we've got this like
interesting
halo effect happening out here
this is eerie
we're heading towards cape mendocino
right now
you know i don't really care that it's
this calm
[Music]
because cape mendocino is my nemesis
i've done it a dozen times
11 times it kicked my ass
today well i'm not going to talk about
it
because i want the seas to stay calm
we're heading into shelter cove tonight
we'll anchor there and then scoot into
fort bragg tomorrow
it'll be 65 nautical miles uh today
and about 38 tomorrow
[Music]
hopefully this wind picks up as we get
by the cape
we're about 15 18 miles from the cape
right now
after the cape i'm hoping for wind
just amazing look at this
[Music]
well it's been just a leisurely trip
here
[Music]
it's been peaceful sometimes it's boring
this is punta gorda here we just
rounded cape mendocino
and we're about 25 miles from dropping a
hook up here
so let's keep plugging along
[Music]
it's real interesting this section of
the coast
a lot of unsettled water right through
here you can see the difference if you
look off in the distance here
it's all around us we go through
or we have to pass over four large
canyons
and we'll be sitting in or we'll be
traveling across 300
foot depth of water and in a matter of a
mile you go to three and four thousand
feet deep
and then back to about 300 feet
and there's four of them we have to go
go across right here so
your speed will go from five and a half
six knots down to three knots
as the water's boiling all around you i
mean you can see it if you look off in
the distance here
it's crazy we're going through the
motole canyon right now we have two left
we've already went through the
mendocino canyon
pretty interesting
[Music]
the wind's finally picked up and we are
about 15 miles from shelter cove
just right around that point over there
we're doing about six and a half
almost seven knots here and there and
it just seems like every single time we
get close to where we're supposed to be
landing
the wind picks up
it's been the calmest seas i've seen
in a very long time all the times that
t.l and i have gone around cape
mendocino it's been
nasty so i'm pretty happy about how
uneventful it's been
god these capes along this stretch of
coast are
interesting five minutes ago we're in 25
knots
now apparent is zero
everything's just flopping
hate to lose the wind but it will be
nice
for a nice quiet night at anchor
we're still about two hours out so we're
just mosing our way in
this is hilarious there's so many flies
in this area and compass is just having
a blast just trying to catch them
there's one right here
oh right there right there go get it go
get it
you must be cautious on the approach to
shelter cove there are many exposed and
submerged rocks that extend
south of point delgada nearly a full
nautical mile
the anchorage is framed with high cliffs
with a mountainous backdrop
known as the king range that elevates to
over four thousand feet above sea level
this area is comparatively isolated and
is referred to as california's lost
coast because of the steepness and
geotechnical challenges
to develop here
[Music]
yeah i want to just swing around on this
and straighten the boat out just let the
wind take us
[Music]
[Music]
okay back down
[Music]
okay stop
back down one more time
[Music]
okay we're good we're good so this is
our home for the night it's a beautiful
anchorage
prevailing wind obviously
we're getting a little bit of swell
wrapping around here but it's
pretty mellow we'll be leaving first
thing tomorrow morning
probably uh six in the morning we need
to get into
fort bragg before uh there's a small
craft advisory that's building up
tomorrow afternoon so we have about 37
miles to go
so we'll hit up bright and early now
we'll get inside make a little dinner
and relax
well we left shelter cove about half
hour ago
it was a beautiful anchorage
i didn't sleep well i'll be honest we
came in
and it was blowing 20 out of the north
and that's what that anchorage is great
for
but about midnight the winds clocked
around
to the south about 10 knots not too bad
you know it wasn't hardly moving us but
we're on a leash or in a roadstead
anchorage
so it's a bit unnerving i was watching
my
anchor watch system closely and got up
and walked the deck
a half a dozen times last night but
all's good
got up this morning pulled the anchor
and
we're off to fort bragg in the noyo
river
it's about 37 miles so it'll be a short
day
winds are kind of calm like they've been
every morning here but they always pick
up in the afternoon so we should uh
be sailing soon
well lynn is hard at it again
[Music]
we had a fishing boat pass us and blast
us with some exhaust
and it speckled the decks
lynn figured she'd get up this morning
and use the dew to
scrub the decks
[Music]
and there's a lot of deck
right as we were leaving we heard a
crash and
this bird hit our boat so
it was soaking wet and really freaked
out
so we want to see if it can fly now
that it's all dry
good job man
oh he's all better
i hope it's gonna be okay
the rest of today's passage was calm but
very interesting
we had times of dense fog and clearing
skies and then
back to fog at one point the fog lifted
just in time for us to pass through
a large pot of blue whales it was all
hand on deck
to help navigate through as many as 50
whales in two nautical miles
it was awesome the approach to the noyo
river entrance is spectacular
the coastline is rugged with massive
rock formations extending for miles
the entrance is narrow but well marked
as you cross the bar and under the
bridge it feels like you were in a movie
set
this was a magical experience that i
will remember forever
it's really like eerie out here i keep
seeing like water crash
where i didn't even know there were like
rocks
look it opens right up in here it
doesn't look uh very wide
on the charts but i'm sure there's
plenty of room
okay here's the bar right now it's a
good day to come across this
we're coming in on a flood tide the tail
end of a flood tide which is perfect
timing
[Music]
the no-yo river this is highway 101.
got plenty of clearance on this bridge
93 93 feet i think is the clearance on
this
but look at this entrance narrow with
kelp on
both sides
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
well that seemed easy yeah not too bad
we're doing a stern to stern with that
the sea wind
because there's not much room on this
dock
emma yeah engines
[Music]
i'm impressed every time
[Music]
so
[Music]
[Music]
you
