well
welcome back to SB basic yeah it's a
gloomy day it's raining it's miserable
guess it kind of matches my mood right
now after our last Anchorage we had some
issues with a sail drive haven't talked
much about it but I will we were in
Cole's Bay tied to a mooring ball and
sail boat next to us was bumping up real
close to us I decided to move so at
midnight
I moved the boat and while we were rear
anchoring I shifted into reverse in both
engines a few times everything was fine
and then I shifted one more time and our
port engine started shaking the whole
boat started shaking
something failed in the sail drive so I
killed that engine anchored on the other
engine and started up the next morning
actually I thought be honest I thought
we had run over a crab pot something
fouled the prop I mean that's what it
felt like like there was a line wrapped
around the prop and the engine was a
struggling to turn that prop so the next
morning before we left I threw a camera
on that prop and it was clear so I
started up the engines we pulled anchor
and we motored into Brett wood Bay we're
on a dock right now friends of ours and
as I was approaching the dock I hit
reverse on the engine again and the same
thing something failed in that sail
drive so a little depressing we're far
away from any haul off facility and I'm
hoping we could diagnose this and fix it
in the water this is a little beyond my
skill set and comfort so I've called in
a marine mechanic he should be here
within an hour and I'll discuss our
options I'll let him take a look at it
and give me his honest opinion
[Music]
I hate to think of the alternative if we
have to pull the boat again
let's either go further into Canada over
to Vancouver or back to Port Townsend
either way it's chewing into our window
to go south fast and it's I'll be honest
I'm a little a little worried
so we'll see it he has to say hopefully
it's a something we could fix in the
water and fix right here but if not
still go on as planned we get the sails
and rigging done while we're here in
Brentwood Bay and then we'll limp into a
whole facility and we'll have to make
the decision later
girls are off the boat right now sent
them out to go have a fun day with some
friends and I'd rather discuss this with
a marine mechanic myself and figure it
out but we'll see hopefully it's an easy
fix the Sun will come out and we'll be
on our way
time will tell so this happened on our
port engine and it shook so bad this is
what scared me a bit this is our sail
drive there's a rubber diaphragm with a
ring clamp that holds it all together
that ring clamp shook free I don't want
to touch this start this engine I don't
wanna do anything till I get an expert
to look at this with that ring missing
and my chancing sinking this boat you
know I don't know I'm not real familiar
with what happens below this original
ring or this initial ring but it got me
thinking you know do I have enough bilge
pumps on board oh well I can add bilge
pumps all day long don't have enough
power to run them you know I can always
run the starboard engine to power the
boat if we're running low but I want to
make sure I have enough build pumps so I
said I'm doing today well I'm waiting
for the mechanic I'm adding two more
750s wiring them in right now adding
them to my builds pump controls
[Music]
they're gonna go in the wells next to
the transducers it's just a little more
protection a little more peace of mind
but while I'm waiting I might as well do
something so I just spent the last hour
with a couple of guys from vector marine
they specialize in Yanmar engines and
you know what I'm glad I called them
they went through the engines they went
through the engine mounts they suspect
that it could be a ninja mountain
problem that would cause the shaking
everything looked great they looked at
the sale drives sale drives were in
great condition everything looked just
normal the ring that popped off was just
a ring that was holding a dust cover so
we were not in any danger of taking on
water and it was great news but we still
had to figure out where the vibration
was coming from so now that we knew
though it wasn't the engine we knew the
cell drives were not the culprit we went
to the propellers unfortunately we threw
a camera on there and we could see that
one of our Kiwi props the blade was
wobbling and we couldn't determine why
so it was get a diver in the water and
figured out sorry this is embarrassing
getting a camera in your face yeah okay
thanks okay so we had vector marine out
here diagnose the problem looks like
it's not the sail drive which is good
news it's most likely the Kiwi props
correct so they've given me some advice
to get a diver down there to pull the
prop and check it out and we'll go from
that so thanks a lot guys
[Music]
so nice soon as we get the good news
that it's not the sale drive that it's
our profits acting up I mean that's
really good news that means we don't
need to haul the boat we could fix it in
the water the Sun comes out just like
that
so we lined up a diver he's gonna be
here in about three hours
gives me enough time start working on
deck hardware start laying this stuff
out I mean that's how we're here we're
here to get the sales going been making
parts and pieces over the past couple
weeks lining things up start laying this
out on the decks and start to get this
organized can't wave to the diver get
here hopefully it's a nice simple fix I
mean I'm hoping it's fishing line
something tangled up in the in the prop
that's creating that blade to wobble as
you know we hauled the boat not too long
ago five or six weeks ago six weeks ago
and the prop was in perfect condition I
did a service on it grease to all the
fittings and everything looked perfect
but obviously we ran into a snag well
know a little bit more after the diver
goes down I dive on on myself and
usually I will but the water
temperatures 50 degrees and I don't have
a real good wetsuit so we'll let him do
his job and we'll see what he says so
you guys what's life without challenges
right we are we got a big challenge
right now
there was a lot of excitement last night
with our engine you don't know what's
going on but trying to stay positive and
kind of keep things in stride because
that's all you could do yeah we could be
depressed about it but you know the
silver lining is is even though we have
this issue we don't even know what's
going on yet we have friends that we met
years ago when we went cruising Karen
and Barry yeah and they just happened to
be just a couple of nautical miles from
where we were at and they have a dock
and they open their their home and
Internet yes and was very excited
because we have unlimited internet and
what kid doesn't want unlimited internet
access right great that's great we have
a diver coming in later tonight which
who we actually met just the other night
as well and he said yeah he'll come in
and dive down and see what's going on so
[Music]
here we are I looks like we're bringing
in the heavy we are so lucky that we've
been forged and he knows what the heck
he's doing I'm gonna launch the dinghy
and get some lanyard over to you okay
so you guys this is serious legit okay
we thought that our diver was gonna be
going in in the dry suit up here in
British Columbia no he says it's so hot
that he is going to do a wet suit props
to this guy as an inlet
we're used to inlets getting shallower
as you go up right like a fjord right
and this one's the reverse fjord so it
is nybridge you come in out there
between here and those mountains 600
metres plus metres seriously I want to
go ahead and put on a jacket right now
cause it's starting to get chilly I am
such a wimp
big-time wussy
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
okay so that's an explainable now yeah
the other cue yeah loose loose loose
yeah they they spin okay they're
supposed to spin and the set screw in
the middle is rigid and so the outer
perimeter spins yes there's one missing
so I'm celebrating early because you
guys the diver just left and it looks
like one of our reversing roller nut is
missing which i think is an easy fix cuz
we just need to get it on order it's
after hours right now so I'll get on the
phone with them first thing in the
morning
in the meantime teal is running around
smiling and celebrating and I don't know
what you were doing earlier it was a
little dance static what could have been
he was stressed what could've been a bad
situation turned out to be an easy fix
so we'll be able to just wait for that
part to come in and we'll get on with
our projects put in time
[Music]
well we've got a beautiful day here in
Brentwood Bay could not ask for any
better weather it's just gorgeous out so
what I've been working on these are all
the risers for all the deck hardware and
you know I could just put these in
aiming at all their points real easy but
I'm trying to jockey them around so they
make sense the lines run smooth and a
hide as much hardware from the interiors
I can I'll show you I'm talking about
they've kind of moving these around and
jockeying left and right and forward and
back I'm able to hide like hardware
behind the lights off it inside of
lockers I'm actually putting something
behind the bulkhead here just trying to
keep as much obstructions off of this
coat roof as possible there'll be a few
but I'm trying to minimalize that so
we'll see how we do think about ready
actually I feel good about the location
of all this hardware and we're gonna
start drilling start mounting here it's
a good day to do it
sun's out
[Music]
so let's get to work
fugly out here fast
I think I'll stick to indoor projects
today what do you think so that has a
pungent smell oh my nose I like the
smell it smells clean does it feel good
to get this winch it does yeah it's in
great shape
it's a classic winch and just needs a
little bit of a love some lubricant and
put it back together and we'll mount
this to the deck 104
well we don't have four oh no we're on
the hunt for three more
so the rain let up it's sunny it's
chilly so we're getting some work done
on the deck starting with the winters
here
[Music]
one piece at a time here okay I knew
it's gonna be a little difficult trying
to gauge the length of all my bolts for
all this different hardware and I picked
up most of it before we left the states
these bullets I picked up just a little
bit off I have to run the hardware store
here and get the right ones
so until then that what happen later
today I'll just keep going here's my
next one going down it's a single rope
clutch everything lines up
I've got butyl tape in between the
clutch a Mayan riser and my riser and
the deck just start putting these in
getting these all fit all right so ready
we had our choice of who wants to be
outside who wants to be inside right
teal volunteered to be outside because
I'm such a wussy about cold it's
actually kind of sunny out here it's
sunny but it's it's like an Arctic brisk
breeze it's not okay hits you smack in
the face are you ready we got a lot of
these to do okay let's start with the
one closest to the lights off but okay
wait until I'm set up go ahead and do
the one don't go all the way it's cinch
it like 90 percent
okay I got a quick ride up to the
hardware store picked up the right bolts
for the winch slammed in nice and easy
now we're doing another rope clutch here
okay ready go ahead
[Music]
[Music]
okay yeah
they feel good
[Music]
okay just got a notification from FedEx
that our rollers for our Kiwi prop came
in we ordered those a day and a half ago
and here they are so now we can line up
the diver I'll give him a call
hopefully you get out here later this
afternoon let's open these up make sure
they're the right part I got a full set
three of them
this little piece fell off and that was
causing all the havoc and the rumbling
in the engines so I made a mistake and
it's a big one because it involves
compass what I thought was another month
or two supply of dog food we are days
away of running out and so we normally
order it on Amazon and it ships to us
within a day couldn't figure out why it
wasn't coming to us here in Canada turns
out you can't ship dog food to Canada
from the US so I called around and it
looks like we found this store that
carries it in Victoria so we got a
loaner from a friend and we're gonna
take off the sporting grab that come
back because we have a ton of stuff left
to do but I feel so bad compass is
really sensitive with his foods and so
this is the only one that seems to agree
with him so that's what we gotta do so
our friends were kind enough to lend us
a little runabout so we can get some
errands done
and I thought it was a little runabout
because that's what they called it
check out this monster
[Music]
this is so crazy this is not what I
caught wiki Sarah a runabout
this alert let's go
just big ship mistake god I can't
remember when
well I'm sure to all come back let's go
Emma do you know his dick
[Music]
my first time in a stick shift hey it's
a truck it's supposed to be bumpy that's
bigger than compass look at this
350,000 miles on this truck fronts like
a top
okay we ran our errands got a few things
didn't get everything on our list but we
had to rush back to the boat because the
divers in route okay we've got the
divers suiting up right now I've got my
reversing roller attached to the tool
attached to a lanyard we have locked
tight
no this isn't the optimum way to do this
you know we should be out of the water
but this is kind of an emergency
situation there's no hall out here so
we'll put this in and see how things go
I do have extra parts if we have to do
this all again but at least it it's a
temporary fix until our next haul out
hopefully holds up talked to the
manufacturer they said just use red
loctite on there
be careful with it do not get it on the
roller itself and we should be good
after 24 hours I guess we'll see so just
get it into this position right here so
it's one of these three I don't know
which one it was but these blades you
just flick it up out of the way and then
just get it set in there should go nice
and smooth and then as soon as you get
it seated in as tight as you can with
this just yank that out yeah and then
pull the tape off yeah I'll reset the
tool see we could turn it you can get
more leverage
sounds fine I will set the blades to the
same as the others oh yeah yes yes you
have to make sure yes make sure the
blades are in the right you're right
because you could get it on the opposite
side wrong you're wrong oh yeah so yeah
if you face all the blades like in this
position put it on it should work
perfect this is good okay okay I don't
know if it's pro but it'll work
the water is way colder than Tuesday
lucky thing you're in there then what's
that I'm glad you're in there okay do
you want to get the blades in the right
orientation
[Music]
