hey guys welcome back to SB basic so we
have been working our butts off getting
everything done and we're getting close
so this week we are going to be tackling
the painting project which is so
exciting because that means that we're
getting done and we're getting ready to
splash back in the water
shields already prepped the boot stripe
and the hull and now it's time to tackle
the bottom paint so before we get to
that I got to do a little clothes
shopping that's right you need a new
outfit when you do the bottom paint so
not only did I get one for me I got one
for teal his-and-hers great we'll be
twins we're going slow fashionable
you're gonna die
okay but yeah we do need the protection
who knows what's in this bottom paint
and we want to keep it off our skins and
get all suited up let's get suited up so
let's get to work
oh it's perfect looking good
oh yeah this is not a small Hey
I think it looks sexy one size fits all
just cut off the arms and legs you'll be
fine well it'll work okay
our bottom pain we're not gonna apply
bottom pain right now we're just
preparing a surface
so let's see what we need to do go to
our guide here we actually are using
interlocks fiberglass bottom code aqua
look at their compatibility guide here
we find our old paint and fiber glass
bottle code aqua
it says do a light sand before
application so that's all get started
[Applause]
[Applause]
[Music]
Cal in starting to wipe down all the
dust and debris off the surface here so
the tape will stick and the paint will
stick and she's also looking for
anything i io verloc checking for any
little divots or dings that I have
missed no I doubt she'll tell me nope
this perfect just get the pain down huh
no it's out you're saying
[Music]
well good morning
look at that it's not raining right now
it's been off and on rain for the last
10 days here and we're kind of fighting
that we need a a good solid 10 days to
finish this all the painting on board
but we're to the point where words have
to start putting paint down and just
paint in between the rain
everything's been prepped we are looking
good we've gone through the whole boat
and went through and filled all the you
know the through holes we've gone
through and fared out any little defects
you know slightly sanded and scuffed the
hull we've sanded out the bottom you
know we've got a lot of different
products going down here we're using an
inter luxe bright side for the sides and
the booth driver we're using the inter
likes fiberglass bottom coat aqua for
the bottom paint it's a hard scrubber
Bowl and for the primer we used the
inner protect 2008 that's another inner
inter luxe product but I think we're
ready
well I know we're ready you know when it
rains we kind of shift gears and do
other projects but we're to the point
where we just gotta start getting paint
down we got to get this boat in the
water so it looks like we're gonna have
a decent day rains not scheduled till
well there's a chance of it later in the
afternoon but we're hoping it'll skirt
around us so let's get at least this
boot stripe in today it's a first step
it needs to go down because we need to
slightly sand it and put a second coat
on tomorrow morning
[Music]
the good project for today there's quite
a bit of bootstrapping to do here you
know we have forty three and a half foot
holes so that's eighty six feet of 87
feet of boots drive times too so we're
gonna have you know close to one hundred
ninety two hundred feet of bootstrap by
the time we make all these radiuses
around and around the transoms it's
gonna be a lot of painting today we're
gonna get busy all right so you see this
smile this is a happy person right here
because today is P day and I mean P
meaning paint day it is nice and dry so
we went out this morning wiped
everything down and teal has been taping
the boot strike well they got one side
does not even oh what one side it was we
got three more to go
oh my god no pressure I think you're a
little little short there are you moving
up higher no it's fine
I'm just kidding right in my eye level
no it looks good
so exciting
it's a gorgeous day we got a couple of
dry days hoping fingers crossed because
Port Townsend is notorious for saying
it's gonna be dry and then it'll rain
because last night it rained a little
bit and it may do that again tonight but
during the day it'll be dry exactly
fingers crossed my age no comment
[Music]
[Music]
I think somebody's happy
all right what are you doing
well we couldn't find a color we liked
so we're making our own color we're
gonna take one quart of steel gray and
add one pint of black just to darken it
up a bit
hope this works for you I hope so too
well it's the first coat so you don't
like it well we'll play with the second
coat too bad right I think you'll like
it
[Music]
and if we ever have to touch this up we
know the formula it's amazing how much
they darken it up I think you're in low
maybe not no that's not too bad
quite a bit darker than I mean look at
that look from that to that pretty good
I think I like it
so teal has started the first coat of
the boots stripe and I gotta admit it's
looking good you like to color I think I
love the color
yeah
- okay we started with the bootstrap for
a reason you know this right I do well
two things to save time because now we
can tape onto the bootstrap to do this
and this at the same time but the other
reason is we had sand it off our water
line this way if we retain the boot
stripe and do this first I was able to
measure down and keep our water line
nice and true I know it's kind of
nerve-wracking when you're taping up hey
and just guessing you mean we're not
guessing but I did well through here I
was taking measurements off the top to
make sure I I stayed that exact distance
so we'll do a couple coats of this we're
working around one time yeah and then
sand it with 220 in the morning and one
more coat then we'll peel the tape and
on to the next project
[Music]
okay starboard haul is done for the
first coat everything is laying down
really nice looking pretty sweet and
sexy and he'll is almost done with the
inside
[Music]
if you're painting it's sexy if you're
not painting not so sexy
how about that but it's looking good
[Music]
[Music]
okay that went down pretty quick God
both boots stripes painted in about an
hour and 15 minutes and this paint is
just laying down nicely with the wait
about 24 hours
I'll scuff it with 220 one more coat and
feel the tape like any paint job I'm 99%
happy with it it's a couple areas that I
missed but they're on the inside of the
hole everything else I love hopefully I
can sand a little bit of it out before
the next coat it looks good I'm happy
this
[Music]
we let this cure overnight it's the next
morning gonna lightly scuff it with 220
I get the second coat on well we've got
these ominous clouds all around us today
checking the radar there's rain
everywhere look at these things
hopefully they hold up because we gotta
keep moving
I don't want weather to be holding us up
now but it looks like it's gonna well
let's get this second coat on and cross
our fingers
[Music]
so what's the plan
eat my breakfast and then paint
Waldo meow
what I like it I know
so you didn't like scuffing on
everything yep all the way around
gonna wipe it down with a 333 and
get some paint down before it starts
raining oh I know where hey I don't
think it's gonna rain it says it's gonna
rain like later today
what are these clouds it's going the
opposite way I know that's it looks like
okay I'll get the plastic ready just in
case all right I'm gonna enjoy some
coffee
[Music]
ready
how's the second count
I'm really nice actually I think today's
conditions is even better than
yesterday's yeah you know there's a very
strong chance of scattered showers but
no Sun so no wind no wait until later
today
that means no dust from the traffic
really busy yard so when you're painting
the yard gives you these nice little
signs they'll let everybody know that
you're painting to slow down so it
doesn't kick up dust we're hoping that
this works because right now there's no
wind and it's fairly early so there's
not that much traffic hopefully we'll
get this all down before it gets really
busy because it does there's a lot of
traffic that runs through here
okay
I use a a rollin tip method but I roll
and tip with Sam roller seal the bubbles
a roller puts down a lot of bubbles and
you could tip it with a brush over the
roller so what I do is I get the paint
down first and after about one to two
minutes it starts to lay down and then I
come back with a dry roller and tip it
I'll show you how I do that I just
rolled out my roller make sure it's nice
and dry taper this end here so when I
come back to it it doesn't leave a mark
and go back to buy it two three minutes
ago which is right in here okay so see
all this bubbling will turn it see if
let's see the sheen here and it just
zero pressure dry roller
just run over it and the bubbles's go
right away
[Music]
[Music]
it's pretty easy actually lot better
than tipping with your brush and leaving
the brushstrokes this does leave just a
fine fine stipple from the ruler but I
kind of like that
all right this is the moment of truth
how well did we do well looking pretty
good so far
such thing yeah really good nice and
crisp I'm just worried will we reap tape
on tape yeah well we need to add make
sure it cures five days look at that
it's a nice crisp line no I'm happy to
that yeah so watch this see this how you
kind of keep it like this and you keep
it folded down like this just keep
pulling like that now the trick is go
and pull keep pulling down
really slow keep that same angle
when to get a little bit too much in the
hand like this watch start pulling it
and I'll search in the top
okay I just said another arena a taste I
sort of know
there you go there were the paint's
still kind of wet Emma
so just used like two fingers and pulled
it up on itself and just keep going down
hold on I'm gonna try to catch up to you
how's it looking
is it satisfying
now that all the tape is peeled off I'm
able to just walk around and look at it
overall I'm happy with it is it perfect
no it's not perfect but look here's some
of these screw holes I shaved through
here's one that bisects the line here
you know I look at it maybe you can see
it I'm not sure it looks pretty damn
good though
I did a pretty good job all the way
around the boat there's a couple spots
that I'd like to redo but you know what
I got to keep moving the worst of it was
right here for some reason there's just
this spot of about six or eight feet
right through here that I don't know
what I did doesn't look bad at a glance
it's under the boat so doesn't bother me
I'm lying it bothers me
I would love to redo it at this point
but I can't I gotta keep moving we got
too much to do
so we're gonna let this cure for a
couple days before we tape off and paint
up and paint down in the meantime rains
gonna be here
starting today anyway so I'm going to
jump to some other projects
we got dramatic now it's kind of cool to
practice under here
[Music]
