welcome back to s we basic today I'm on
my lifestyle we will be getting supplies
to finish the door in the master head
can you guess where we're gonna get him
the marine store I'd like this store but
my dad loves this store
[Music]

[Music]
I am in the master head still working on
the store but we're about done door is
completely built and primered now it's
the fun part we need to get some paint
on this door we're gonna go with inter
luxe Brightside polyurethane in a grey
to match the rest of the doors on the
boat but before I do that I want to put
in my handset my handset goes right here
it's a Pirkle handset we also have to
put a doorstop on the jam I want to put
a dork edge down here to lock it in the
open position next thing I'll be doing
is moving this light switch outside the
door since now that when the door opens
it covers the light switch
these two light switches I'll just reuse
this switch now we'll handle under
counter lighting and this other switch
will be behind this pink door which is
our new shower so I'll have lighting in
the shower
I've got everything laid out here's my
electrical needs here's my door catch
here's the paint and the handset so
let's get to work before we get this
painted I want to get the hardware all
attached and mortise in so I'm gonna
start with the handset a standard
household door handset is 36 inches off
the ground these doors are scaled down a
little bit and throughout the boat I've
maintained a 33 inch rise on my handsets
this is just primer so I'm just gonna
sketch out right on the door
my offset for the first bar is inch and
3/16 and I need to find the center mark
of the door this one's a 9/16 s4 this is
a 3/4 inch floor going into that night
Accord is always fun there you go
Len can approve anyway
[Music]
next thing I'd like to do is pick all
this loose night of course pieces out of
here get them out
so the handset spins nicely in there
here we go get in there
under to a little ones left there we go
okay the next step is dry fit all the
pieces so I can mortise in the strike
plate looks clean make sure you get the
lock on the right side
I've marked out the plates for the
handsets now I will drill pilot holes
for the hardware to attach it okay the
next thing I need to do is Mount the
strike plate the best way to do that is
just close the door and kind of put it
right where needs to be reveal wise
everything looks good the center mark
just make it a little sketch right there
on your jamb
there's a lot of ways to get this
mortise tin some people just overlay it
right on there but I'm actually gonna
mortise it in so here's my Center mark
and I've made a center mark on this
here's how I like to mark up my screw
holes I'm actually gonna attach it on
the surface now with the screws that way
I can make a nice accurate cut with my
razor around this okay at this point
this is where you test it before you
more juice it in make sure all your
calculations are right and I'm looking
for the same reveal over here that's
over here it looks like I have nailed it
and after that don't forget to leave the
handset in with you did you get it up
and back out okay what's more that's the
sin okay this is a tough mortise right
here this is all finished paint over
glass I like do this at this stage
because if I do get a little chip out I
can still have time to repair this and
put a little paint on it but we'll see
how well we do I attach the strike plate
first so I could run a razor around the
perimeter of it
[Music]
a lot more accurate than doing a pencil
mark I will do a pencil mark though on
the inside here because I need to
mortise this out a little bit deeper
once I go around the perimeter two or
three times I'll remove this and start
chiseling okay I scored all the way
around this strike plate take this off
take a look at it at this point I want
to mortise in this because if I start
chiseling away and I'll lose my mark so
I'll do that next
[Music]
now just slowly chisel away this for a
nice sharp chisel it comes in handy just
take your time do not rush this give a
little test
that's pretty good
okay the strike is in the handsets in
see how this action works
clicks nicely but there's nothing that
can stop the door from going too far
forward so that's next I'll put the
doorstop in okay for the stop I just
ripped a piece of starboard lumber half
by half and then drill a hole every six
inches that's gonna fit right up against
the jamb and create a nice stop I
brought out the edges just get a nice
little eight inch round over so as
you're walking by and brushing against
it it doesn't snag it close okay I'll
just attach this door stops in this
puppy's not going anywhere who wants to
test this thing
it's what whatever okay try to I know it
works now trying to lock it I want to
see if the lock works lock it
the locked no yeah it is
okay now I'm lock it and whatever it's
good awesome our last door get in there
almost done couple more things not yet I
got the door catch to put on next I
don't need a catch
you need a catch I am your catch okay I
got a little project done
it's in raining all night early just
soaked but the Sun came out so where are
we going
and you're gonna carry him
[Applause]
[Music]
now that the door is in the hinge is set
handsets in strikes in and the door
stops in I mean the door is fully
functional but it's nice to be able to
lock in the open position I've done this
with every door on the boat so far what
I do is put a door catch on this one's a
little trickier I don't really have it
coming up against a wall and I need to
stand it off of this counter I I can't I
don't want to tilt it way over here
because I you have to be able to get
back to reach the door catch so I want
to keep this parallel with the counter
as close as I can so you have a nice way
to release the door catch that's why I
got an extended door catch but it's
still not quite far enough so what I'll
have to do is cut a little 3/4 spacer on
a starboard lumber a little standoff get
a little more distance on this here's
the other issue if I mount this on the
wall here it's a tripping hazard as
you're brushing your teeth so I'm
thinking of doing Tryon no I'm gonna do
it I'm gonna put the catch side on here
and actually mount it backwards there's
no way anybody stands next to it door
that close so it'll be out of the way
that's the plan I'll mock it up right
now see how functional it is see if I
like it I could always swap it back
what I did is cut out two blocks attach
them with a screw because not going to
shape them to match up all these faces
now I'll put a nice little round over on
this
[Music]
now that my standoff is done what I did
is going to melt this right here it's an
inch-and-a-half standoff brought it
around to the first flat I could get to
it said this radius and that gives me
plenty of fight on the door so make this
strong I broke it apart then applied two
fasteners already
now the next two fasteners are for the
hardware which are offsetting these and
going the opposite corners so I'll have
four fasteners tying it into the cabinet
I want this to be nice and strong
now just line this up marked it out and
I'm going to drill these all the way
through this into this as well with
extra-long fasteners then I'll give me a
total of five fasteners through this one
little block it's already feeling solid
I knew not to do that now it's just a
matter of driving these fasteners okay
let's see how this works now nice
now that all the hardware's on I'm gonna
break this door down strip it all the
hardware right back off and get the same
pain it
okay it's nice day no rain they're
calling for no rain for about eight or
ten days just a little bit of fog in the
morning should burn off here in about an
hour and they be sunny so I'm gonna get
this thing painted up first thing I do
is just run a piece of 220 over this
really lightly and just knock down any
burrs that might have been in the primer
it feels good but I'm still just gonna
lightly stuff this
okay the primer I used was interlocks
prime coat and now I'm going with a
deluxe bright side polyurethane Blue
Rock I do the whole thing with just a
weenie roller I don't back brush it or
anything I'll show you my little tech
make it here in a minute
sun's out enough I think it's time to go
it's important to really give the paint
a good shake before so I put it in my
automated shaker it works pretty good
just give any paint can to Emma for
about two minutes and it's thoroughly
mixed one thing I like to do before I
get started is these rollers some shed
some don't I found one that does real
well but I'd like to knock off any loose
fibers before I get started
seems to help just a little bit but
every little bit what you're trying to
get a smooth finish another thing I like
to do is always start out of eye level
so I'm gonna start at the bottom of this
door slab because if I'm gonna shed any
fibers gonna be right in the beginning
down here it's not right in your eye
level you don't to be looking at it
every time you open the door so by the
time I get up here the roll will be
rolling out nice and clean
trying to get just a nice even coat once
it start stacking up I back roll and
it'll knock down all the little bubbles
nothing's gonna take long at all
of this whole door takes me ten minutes
to paint then I'll come back in about
five minutes and knock it all down it's
warmer out I dock it down probably about
two minutes after
okay this is where I just just the
weight of the roller I just run it over
and keep working it till all the bubbles
are down I like doing this this way
don't get brushstrokes in your paint
it'll lay down nicely
okay it's starting to get there
I'm not doing this in a paint booth so
I'm gonna get a little bit of dust and
debris in it I won't be perfect but
it'll be pretty close
I am just putting ounces of pressure
that's it just letting this thing do its
job here
and that's how I tip with a roller
ok look at this starting to lay down
it'll just keep going to lay down a
little bit more here in the next hour
before I start stacking up I'm just
gonna let it be here's a little trick I
do every time I open a can of paint I
keep it in the fridge keeps it from
skimming over and you can keep it for
years this way does real well of course
it got a fight lid for the refrigerator
space but you got to do what I got to do
ok with the door drawing it's a good
chance for me to knock out the last
couple things to do here one of them
being remove this strike plate and Prime
and paint back in here the other thing
is take the electrical off of this
switch here I'm going to leave these two
switches the one switch right now
handles the overhead lighting all I'm
gonna do is remove the wires from here
these will be just to empty switches I
have a future use for these this one
will be lighting for this mysterious
pink door over here this will actually
be a shower right now this goes 15 feet
to the forward of the the bow of the
boat and I'm using it for storage and
epoxy room tools in there I just put a
piece of foam in there so we're not
heating and cooling that area the other
switch will be under counter lighting
just like the other head so today's
project will be mounting this new switch
to the outside here
so let's do some electrical okay first
thing I do is get this one out and
figure out where I could since this
walls only inch and a half thick these
little boxes have to mount in here go
mount this the other way so I have to
either mount it up above it on the other
side or on the side and I think this is
a little Oaks are going up the stairs so
I'm going about this right here so to do
that I'll take this out and plunge my
multi-tool through the wall and that'll
give me my starting point to lay out the
rest
okay next thing we'll do
let's just lay this out
[Music]
[Music]
the rest of this is gonna go real quick
first thing I do secure the box to the
wall here's my switch plate cover this
goes on next grab the wire these are
switch place I made I just took a little
piece of plastic drilled a 3/4 hole and
popped in switches
just fits in here loose now the plate
lineup your switches where you want them
and it holds it all in place and it's
that easy there we go okay it's all in
let's give it a test
oh yeah it's the upper one there we go
and it works next thing to do let's get
this thing back together I won't be
installing these lights Oh probably for
a couple months so what I'm gonna do to
remind me that the switches are in
activated it's not put the switches in
here are the switches that are going in
here
here's the plate I've laid it out
already I'll need to drill the holes and
just pop those in and I'll do that when
I wire it but for now there we go keep
it clean
[Music]
so most try feels good
doors ready to being reinstalled paint
is nice and dry it took four days to
paint one coat on each side flipping it
every day let's button this thing up
looks like we get to take another post
it off the wall
this one I love taking these off because
they bring us so much closer to cruising
let's go downstairs and check out the
new door
