In this episode we're in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, to work on the boat. This marina is famous for being a hub point for blue water sailors preparing to cross...

the Canaries Oh minus vs everyone
welcome to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria we
arrived yesterday night and it's a
really big marina that we're staying in
and the cheapest one so far so that's a
big class and I just woke up it tiring
it was a good sleep after three days out
at sea so behind me you see Palmas and
marina it's beautiful and it's a
beautiful day today I live it's a very
big Harbor so the plan and for this day
here in Las Palmas is that we're gonna
do some repairs and some things on the
boat las Palmas marina is a major hot
point for processors and for people who
want to prove on sailboats the marina is
famous for the arc the Atlantic rally
for cruisers it's a sailing competition
that starting as Palmas and ends in the
Caribbean and it goes every year in
November we realize that our fishing
reel that we bought in Lisbon was too
small so it went to a real fish store to
make an upgrade
our new sunshade is great and makes it
possible to stay in the aft cockpit when
the sun is shining and it made the
cockpit much cozier one thing that we
wanted since we left Sweden is a grill
finally we decided to get one and it was
great the food was delicious
yeah maybe remember the steering problem
that I was talking about in episode 14
I've been taking the parts out now to
try to solve this because it's really
annoying this is the problem right here
this hole in this part is in aluminium
and this hole has been it's not round
anymore it's too big it's been worn out
or since 87 the boat when the boat was
built
like you can hear there's a lot of
people working in this marina including
us what we will try to do here is to get
an stainless sleeve in here so we can
yeah make this whole new hole a bit
bigger hole and put a sleeve in that and
get a new box because in this single
bolt we have both the connection for the
Cobra steering this rod and also the rod
for the outer pilot we have a hydraulic
ram on the top and the cover steering
underneath it this need to be properly
done and it's hard to deal with the
tools we have on the boat so I probably
all right we need to find a machine shop
who can help us with this well yeah this
is the backside of crusing it's not all
the sunny beaches and Anchorage's you
need to work in the boat as well quite a
lot actually especially if you don't
have a new boat so but of course I like
it as well
I think this is a part of sailing and
when you're doing stuff like this you
get to know your boats a lot more so
when something happens when you're far
out to sea it's easier to look at the
problem find a solution for it if you
have to improve all the systems on the
boat
but it's a lot more work with an old
boat that's specially after a tip from a
local we went an industrial zone to find
a machine shop we got some help and now
we just have to wait and cross our
fingers that everything will be all
right as a coincidence we ended up on
the same phone tune as Peter from
Hungary when we found on YouTube
Peter are living in a sailboat body
reversible so kind of turn back just
long way I left England
one year ago I'm a musician and better
right wherever I go I play on the
streets busking on the street and I make
videos video although and I make music
for the videos the longest Swedish word
I know I was tough question actually I
mean I could make one up you know but I
don't know acetate solution Sarah maybe
Shelley soon Sheila I see two silsila
Michi Kish Kish Search Search mini she
should say kisses good Babu good Cobra
Cobra six lakhs a like toffee six six
lakhs axe and lacks a key six Lexus a
black stocking and I easy renounce it
sir
I'm going to try this snus ohmy sneeze
from you on this is a is a Swedish
tradition scorners tobacco that you put
on your lip
sneeze how do you say should feel this
push it up
try to keep it up top of the loop
Howard is follow me he might talk beep
you do see something how long should I
keep it there
how do you see it it's spicy oh good
burning oh you're turning liver
from Carrie Islands I'm going to sail
south visit Africa don't we know exactly
why when I visit Africa mostly for music
and and then I'd like to cross the ocean
I'd say with music around the world so I
would like to interact with other people
have a musician arrival record music
with other people
I'm retaking this off this role here
because it just takes a lot of space in
here so now we will be able to fill it
up a little bit more and to be able to
close this hatch and we save some weight
yeah that's really we're thinking that I
mean this is the last time for may be
quite a while before we are able to you
know find the stuff we need and you know
machine shops and stuff like that so we
decided even if you know of course some
of this stuff costs you a little bit of
money but you really need to do it now
because you know after you cross the
Atlantic maybe in South America it will
be a bit harder I guess to find some of
this stuff yeah let's go back to working
see you
sabisu surgeon
everything finished the steering
all the parts they yeah everything was
correct these are the drawings that we
made for the parts that we need for the
steering and the brackets for the motor
and yeah over here we have the results
this is a part of the quadrant we needed
to have this hole a bit bigger so we
went from 16 to 20 millimeters here
because it was a bit oval in shape
before this hole we have made this bolt
for it just will go through like this we
will have the steering rod to the wheel
connected to this sit like this and on
the other side we will have the ramp for
the hydraulic autopilot so they're
pulling in the same on the same spot
yeah so with this new piece there won't
be any play anymore that we had in the
past
so this clunking sound hopefully it's or
it should be gone now and then we have
the new brackets for the motor it's for
the front of the motor the one we have
now are very corroded and these are made
of stainless steel so we will insulate
them on underneath from the aluminium
that they stand on so there won't be any
more corrosion on the aluminium and the
original ones is in normal the steel not
stainless
we decided to get this made we went to
develop a Penta store here in the marina
and we asked them okay how much is one
new bracket like this in normal steel
and it was 120 euros with import taxes
and freight here to Las Palmas and we
paid 80 both in stainless now so a lot
better
sweet sound of silence works really good
the Beach Las Canteras is located in the
heart of Las Palmas it has a surfing
area a swimming area and a popular
snorkel area there is a reef that goes
as a long strip a few hundred meters out
which stops the wave during low tide so
it's perfect for snorkeling
