How to kill and remove Diesel Bug is a short video showing how we dealt with the diesel bug on our Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 36i.
After losing power multiple times on our passage from Tilos to Kos, we stripped down the fuel system to find bacteria growing in the tank, filters & traps. The only cure for such a bug is an additive that is put directly into the tank and left for 24 hours to work.
Once dead the system must be thoroughly cleaned, including traps, filters, fuel lines & diesel tank. The only part we didn’t do were the fuel lines, they will be replaced before we set sail in 2018.
As we were only a few miles from our home port we also waited until we were safely back in the marina before removing the tank and cleaning that.
I am sure there are many sailors out there who have experienced this problem and have dealt with it in numerous different ways. We wanted to show the procedure we used on our Sun Odyssey 36i, which covers where to find all the relevant parts, including removing them and cleaning them.

anyway run away from to us - well we're
going to yell over and repeat toss the
engine starts - dialers died - appoints
have not stopped him and then picked up
again and kept doing that all the way
here and we check the fuel filter next
to the engine and that's clean we've
seen that out wasn't which in there I
didn't realize there was a fuel trap a
water trap next to the tank which is
here it's a sea path it's got a big one
actually then to be honest it's
absolutely full rubbish water it looks
like there's a boogie marina and we've
come to the Chandler's and we've bought
some biodiesel fuel additive and
apparently it's really good stuff and
hundred mils of this will kill off the
book that we've got so if you note that
- the tank now mostly 24 hours before we
start the engine
oh you actually move wait for a couple
days anyway so
so this is the water trap drink because
obviously you get water and fuel this
new eco fuel is this is a tank pickup
and I just took it out and it's full of
gunk it was just rock solid so there's
obviously a bit of a bug in there and
it's clogged everything up got a bit of
pepper I like to clean the fuel filter
and those are the bits that have come
out it's quite a lot of crap really so
just keep cleaning in and make sure it
runs clear among that this is a field
filter that is attached to the engine so
it's the last filter that filters the
fuel before it actually goes in and
without this off before and cleaning it
out but now finding what we've found
think it's a good idea to do it again
so I want to take it off
so it'll filter when you leave a
difference but then again I suppose I do
get there to it yeah so I've been and
gotten even and that was well

we've taken all the diesel out of the
tank we found couple of black bits at
the bottom but the rest seemed pretty
clear so here you've got the this one
borrowed and then all the connectors and
then the inlet and the outlet pipes in a
hurry so what's stopping it little clips
so I'm taking the tank out swill it out
with petrol it was pretty clean anyway
very very little bit of anything in it
the only sort of crap that came out was
that bit in the bottom of there
so this is the sender unit Pepsi need
the vine so this is the sender unit this
is fuel gauge tells you
