We have been so lucky to sail the Mediterranean for over a year, but this week it comes to an end. We finish the season in Turkey, a beautiful country which is so often forgotten or misunderstood. We sail the coast on route for Marmaris where we would lift Kawai and winter her until we return from Australia.
We begin by sailing from Didim where we collect our papers from our agent to the picturesque town of Akyarla, where we spend a chilled afternoon enjoying a few beers overlooking the pretty town. We enjoy a traditional Turkish meal at a local restaurant and post a new video while eating (using the restaurant wifi).
With some strong winds we head for Ciflik, 88nm from Akyarla and zigzag in between many of the Greek Islands we had previously anchored. It's a bittersweet moment, as it's our last sail of the season but a step closer to seeing family and friends back in Australia.
Kawai will be spending her time at Marmaris Yacht Marina, so we anchor outside and sort the paper work before preparing the boat for a lift. We bring down the sails and our sailing comes to an end for a while.
About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia.
Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

what an amazing year after buying our
boat kawaii in gochek turkey we have
explored some truly incredible places
sparkling clear waters vibrant towns and
amazing wildlife have made for an
unforgettable journey in our first
season we explored greece croatia
montenegro greece again and are excited
to be able to winter our boat in turkey
although sailing does have its
challenges the good times massively
outweigh the bad and it really makes you
feel alive
this week we continue sailing down the
coast of turkey exploring picturesque
towns on our way to marmarus the time
has come to winter kauai and get her out
of the water before the bad weather
arrives are we moving again yes we are
off to get our paperwork from our agent
and then we are on our way to marmaris
why is that oh we're getting called out
for the winter
yeah we've got some bad weather coming
yes so we need to get there by
before monday hopefully saturday we will
get called out today is wednesday
50 knots coming
yeah yuck
up early to catch some great winds our
initial sail would take us 30 nautical
miles from dithum to the well protected
bay of aquiala
[Music]
i know we're going
[Music]
i know we work for days losing hope
fading
[Music]
you're a bit excited today aren't you
i'm excited it's a good sailing day
which
we haven't had in a couple of days so
you know when you're pumping along going
six knots
good wind it's calm we're just gliding
through the water it's fun
grease here turkey there
we won't say where we are right at this
second we are in the turkish waters of
course
living on the water you were always
treated to breathtaking views today was
no exception we're often asked what this
lifestyle is like but there are so many
different emotions that i have never
felt before and unique experiences it is
difficult to put it all into words i
just know that i am seriously grateful
and wouldn't want to have lived my life
without experiencing this
oh hey big down the water that's been on
the water all day pretty much and uh
it's nice to arrive to aqua
and
see a different town it's quite
different there's some
very fancy resorts on the way in and
then
the town looks really cute lots of
little restaurants on the water and
there's all different types of
architecture
so um
yeah it's quite interesting
yeah for what to expect when we head to
shore
yeah we're heading to shore which um
yeah well we haven't
really touched ground in turkey yet have
we no we have to go in we've got to post
a video tonight
we've only ever got one gig a day so
just got to go in and buy something
yeah i'm looking forward to it looks
really cool over there yeah
and again we're the uh
we're the only boat in the anchorage a
little marina across from us but
yeah just us so
it's quite easy dropped in sand and um
it's always
this time of year it's just so simple
just drop the anchor in your suite yeah
our first
meal out in uh turkey maybe our only
meal
maybe one more we'll have a couple more
maybe one more that's before before we
go home yes
it's a good start this is a traditional
turkish restaurant family run so um
yeah we've just got some mezzes to start
with finally then
we somehow got some yogurt that we
didn't really ask for but uh
yeah we got more coming though
got plenty more coming yeah and it's
yummy
turkey's food is so good yeah it's
amazing
you actually look really smug right now
excuse me what's going on up here
i'm just getting rid of a little bit of
the uh sand and mud
stuck on the anchor that's all
so she was pretty good holding then
yeah
yeah she was um
there's a few things on the ground i've
since seen there's tyres yeah
just down here i'm not sure if you can
see them
in the water
yep
but um
we didn't get caught up in there which
was good
but mostly it's been a really good
anchorage it has slept well last night
which is what we wanted and
we have to keep moving we've got to get
hauled out on saturday yep
and i don't think we've had northerly
winds we've obviously we're trying to
get south and we haven't had any
northerly winds for
close to three weeks
which is a bit of a pain
um and we've got a massive blow coming
from the south
on knots coming on monday
so um we're going to haul out saturday
so
should be good timing to get there yeah
and we've got about
90 nautical miles to go
yeah yeah there's your friend yeah the
blue stuff there what timing
funny that
in today's sale we would zigzag between
the turkish coast and the many greek
islands we had previously stayed at
88 nautical miles in total arriving late
into the night at the anchorage of
shipflick
oh yeah we're sailing
so good such a good feeling let's open
laughs
it's in our sweet spot too kawaii loves
this direction 45 degrees
and now we get good apparent which means
we go faster
winning

[Music]
her dreams
hidden secrets
[Music]
um
we're just trying to stay out of grease
greek waters as much as we can yes
there's a coast guard over there so
unfortunately we've got attack
instead of just cutting across yeah
well we're cruising past cos and we're
just reliving our cos anchorage
nightmare it was
just over there and we uh
we're pretty new to the sailing game uh
an anchoring game and we had some
terrible swells during the night like
huge and we uh
we were trying to leave and then our nav
lights didn't work and
it was just one of them one of them
didn't work and
we were gonna try to get into the marina
and they said it was too unsafe and
we're like we know we're out here on
anchor um
but yeah we're just uh we've learned a
lot this year and when we look back to
that scenario we'd never put ourselves
in that position again
it's
you know really exposed and um yeah but
the wing was meant to be blowing the
opposite direction yeah it wasn't that
we like we had thought it all through
when we actually anchored there was like
no swell at all it was like
10 centimeters swell rolling in changed
from ten to one to two meter swells
crashing on the shore so it was pretty
crazy but um
yeah we've come a long way we're
cruising past it
and we never want to go back to that
anchorage never we never will go back to
it
while we're in turkey and still getting
chased down by bluestar
not really
the turkish coast culture and people are
incredible and we hope to be sailing and
exploring the many acreages in 2022 as
currently we are locked down in
australia due to covert we can't wait to
get back
yeah
call me what on your phone sorry
what are you doing updating your
instagram
your facebook i'm looking at instagram
you're on watch
this is my free time yeah i'm watching
you
hello
hello
we love simmy
well we arrived here last night at about
11 p.m in this anchorage
we had another anchorage that we had
planned but the uh
anchorage was really narrow and we were
near rocks and we would have only been
able to put out like one time scope so
we decided to keep coming and um
yeah it's a bit of an exciting yet sad
day because it's our last day
uh on kauai
on the water
um we're getting hauled out tomorrow so
yeah it's our last sale today and the
weather is
really turned on for us i think the next
week um there's all rain maybe even 10
days straight away here in turkey so um
yeah it's not a long sail today we've
only got
roughly 10 nautical miles to
malmoros
um
so yeah a bit sad but
also exciting we got through our first
first season we left last november and
today is uh
mid-november
late november i don't even know what the
date is it shows that i'm a sailor now
you're off i'm off
the perks of being a dickie
we are pulling up the anchor well
jason's doing the manual work up front
in the rain
in the
shelter
you ready
come on you joking ready
should be pretty nice here in summer i
think
a lot busier though apparently
yep she looks like she'd be a fun place
to come
lots of blue heights here i think
some nice mountains in there yeah
beautiful colored water
well it's a bit of a bittersweet day
today it's our last day on the water
with hawaii we're putting her up
tomorrow
and yeah
we are heading back to australia which
is the sweet part of it oh you'll like
get to see family and friends when we
get back and uh it's been chrissy with
everyone so that'll be good but uh yeah
hopefully
that's um so the weather is starting to
turn now so
in a way it's a bit of a relief that we
won't be on anchor in winter
trying to find places away from storms
and winds because the winds are starting
to look quite a bit crazier
yes we'll have 30 degrees in the sun
australian summer yeah
yeah pretty lucky i guess
yeah best of both worlds yeah
and where are we
we're heading into marmara into the bay
uh we're going to anchor outside the
marina this evening and
get all the paperwork sorted and then
get pulled out
last coffee on the water on kauai for a
little while we'll be back with a break
in the rain and some sunshine we took
the opportunity to take down the head
sail this was the first time the
headsail had been down on kauai for us
and it all started to feel a little real
that our sailing adventure was coming to
an end for a bit little did we know that
it would be for this long
headset down
yep
and uh a good day to bring it down with
four million bees buzzing around yes
poor little
fellas not trying to harm anyone but
there's probably about
45 amongst the sales
but
why are we bringing this down uh we are
bringing it down because we
need to we are wintering our boat and
also the marina requires us to bring it
down before we get on the hard
yeah before we get lifted so we can lift
it in a couple of hours so we're
bringing her down
and um
yeah
it really does start to feel real when
you're bringing your sails down yeah
can't sail anywhere anymore
this is where kauai will be spending her
time out of the water mamaros yacht
marina is one of the largest marinas in
the mediterranean with 1300 yachts on
the land and 1 000 in the water
thanks for watching next time kauai is
lifted and we prepare for the journey
back to australia with lots to do on the
boat before we leave
crazy weather arrives and we finally
make it home
