welcome back to cactus a limb as always
please subscribe a queue from button
down there and if you liked the video
give it a thumbs up so this this next
series of videos is basically going to
be our trip hopefully to the Isles of
Scilly that's the plan but as somebody
once told me the Isles of Scilly is more
of a bonus because you basically you
need a bit of a weather window to get
there and you shouldn't really plan on
it only if you've got a finite amount of
time obviously you know if your season
cruises and that's all you do then you
know you can people just wait out the
weather windows and obviously get there
but we've got to do is we've got to get
to the Isles of Scilly
and we've got to get back within three
weeks so a bit of a tight window that's
initially the plan so that's what you're
going to be joining with us along the
next next couple of videos and basically
we will show you life on board how we
plan our passages basically how we sail
the boat pretty simply awesome for
rigging these kind of things we'll show
you a few tips along the way as well
the first thing you need to look at is
basically the weather or that's why I
look I'm like this let's see what the
weather's doing so I use an app and
obviously you can use it on the web as
well it's called windy windy calm I'll
quickly should quickly to show you what
icon is that's the icon there that's
windy there and basically all this says
this is an app that basically shows you
what the winds doing it gives you a
basically a good forecast where the
winds coming from and what strength is
going to be also gives you a bit little
better indication whether it's gonna be
sunny rainy whatever I like this app
because it's basically it's fairly
reliable you know hasn't really let me
down so far and basically what the
initial plan was is we was gonna I mean
you can hear the wind there we was we
was planning on leaving first thing this
morning but obviously you know we're
here on on the Saturday we wanted to be
leaving here and we've got 31 knots and
goes to 45 I can tell you now in the
marina where we sat in we have basically
we do have we have laws around 25 knots
and and then we have a constant in the
ground 35-ish and then you know it
doesn't go stop to 40 45 is what you
probably just heard just that last night
was a bit of a bumpy ride for the same
bed and the boats really straining on
its lines but we like to think we know
we've tied off plenty line so we're
secure it's not going anywhere and but
obviously that's in the marina out there
in in Weymouth Bay is gonna be a lot
worse that's out there so basically
looking on the weather today is not
going to be a day for going out so
basically what we're planning on doing
now is we're going to spend the day in
Weymouth and we're hopefully gonna leave
first thing tomorrow morning so tomorrow
morning we'll want to catch the tides
I'll show you another app I use as well
and this is all about tight timing and
everything else
I basically use an app called tide
planner because basically on the
currents you get a tidal atlas and it
shows you an icepick station of actually
what's happening so if I'm looking at
some date Oh tomorrow
yep and then basically I just run the
clock back we want to believe it roughly
around roughly around seven o'clock
because that brings us here around eight
o'clock to start catching the tide going
west
so that's the basic plan in a minute but
it all relies they all relies on the or
relies on the weather to be honest
because it is like this tomorrow then I
don't think we want going out in that
because then you end up with a because
the winds come in from the south from
the southwest and the tide will be going
that way as well as gonna be really
talked about there so as you can
probably hear hopefully clearly it is
quite windy out here haven't hauled off
my hat and I was over in the saying his
foe's them if they get into singing it's
probably not not best to go out anyway
I know if you stuck out in this kind of
weather it's a different thing but you
know you wouldn't knowingly head out
into a for safe I'd like to think you
wouldn't anyway especially with it's
because we've got your kids on board as
well so it's not really nice for them so
yeah today is gonna be a long day

Wow
to wake the waves download that bad
it's very windy though yeah there's
nobody bumps out so I'm glad we didn't
go out or anything like that yeah
wouldn't think of anyway but yeah it
looks surprisingly calm you know on the
water that I was expecting bigger waves
when we came out here but to be honest I
think a lot of it because it's coming
from the southwest it's going to be it's
going to be coming into the into
Portland so if we are still sheltered
wave wise here from Portland say looks
looks quite flat all the way along there
but I'm pretty sure when you get out of
there it will be
well the wind doesn't seem to have
calmed down so we're all taught us at in
the boat now did a bit of wander around
Weymouth but we've been here quite a few
times so there were things to do so yeah
we get a bit of marina fever now so we
just want to get out sailing but yeah
somebody did go out in Salem or somebody
was sailing outweighing the bay area but
their life they went to actually work
there so don't think it's price to go
out there as you can add up here the
wind it's not really calm down I would
hope to use to calm down a bit by now
but yeah so it's looking like we'll see
what's happening in the morning now it's
just artistic kettle on and a bit
I think cavity Versailles Li got to shop
if I'm on a trumpet we finally left
Weymouth after three nights of high
winds mostly of the boats heading east
though but we was gonna be punching west
against the wind but we had the tide for
this we were aiming for the ensure
passage but in the shelfs channel pilot
died by tong Cunliffe it suggests the
inshore passage can get quite hairy in
wind / tide scenarios we were quite
nervous because of the things that
actually said in there something along
the lines that portland race is the most
dangerous extended area of broken water
in the English Channel it just so
happened to be spring tides - you have
to venture through these things to gain
experience only then can you learn from
them and now we know what it's like in a
southwesterly or a Wesley force five
just passport the milk i kept the engine
on all the time
Tom's right can get a bit hairy I mean
the wind was gusting 20 knots and we had
a 14 not constant as I was going around
little more than what was forecast I
don't think I want to take the inshore
passage in any more than that it is very
narrow and very much what the the
channel pilot says and there are some
quite big grades in that did see some
dolphins it was coming through but I was
in a bit fun some train like to say I
was on my first time that's the Portland
Bell so you know it's there's a bit of
nervousness about it but I'm glad I'm
glad we did it so the end is off now
we've literally just come around the
back of it we're sailing sailing across
the line Bay one good thing about all
those waves and the bow slapping around
it's fixed our speed log so that started
working again which is nice yeah every
time we clean that it works for a week
and then it stops
so it's somehow it's it's repaired
itself so that's good
yeah so yeah we're now we're now sailing
across like they
[Music]
just pay for a bit of a school there and
that's basic that's the basically the
school over there if you can see
literally K that literally came doubt
descended on us very quickly
yeah the winds got up to about 30 40
knots
and yeah absolutely took it down
and the way you sit flames obviously
bigger say we took the sails down
so down a second
we've got the sails down
yeah because we didn't have time for a
refill I can't believe how could that
Spokane there you know I mean we kind of
saw it and we did actually research an
hour already ready but
yeah we just drop the me go ceiling
rather than five to five without because
it literally went from ten nos deserty
within
exactly this was madness once the winds
died down a bit we got the sails back up
and we carried on a long line back
wind turnaround right on her nose just
who is coming into the bricks and area
so we decided to the motor back on just
so we can get there a little bit quicker
than actually sayin attacking with the
wind
well that was a long old sale weed yeah
beat it into the wind all the way so
we've been beating all the way to bring
some in a westerly and we had a few
schools along the way we a couple of
rain showers but obviously that's lovely
and sunny now a bit cold and waste on
the house but yeah they're all means
with the crew got sick so Jack got sick
well factually first he was a doctor got
sick and then then it was Jeff that got
sick and I think he took off sick as
well
me and some kind of battled it through
someone was looking after everyone she's
been their little they'll help her and
helping everybody out which is really
nice yeah and long old sail
I suppose I suppose that's why you know
if we don't you don't beat into wind
with all the time we need to it took was
just taken nine ten hours here I think
now is ten hours to get here I should
have took us at least seven a half seven
seven seven hours spared the tide with
us obviously the wind was coming
directly from where we wants to go so we
had to tack which meant it's doing more
miles across the ground and but also
that the chop out in line Bay wow it was
really stopping us at some point the
waves were smacking against the hall and
it was a stopping as dead in the water
so even though we was having a fantastic
sale doing like you know six six and a
half knots through the water they you
know who's stopping us dead in the water
and we know he's dropping down to about
three so our average wasn't particularly
great but we're here now so we're gonna
go and get some food cause absolutely
starving I'm gonna get off this boat
okay we're gonna get off this boat right
see you in a bit
