What's in the box Baz?
Well it's a bit of an exciting day here on A B Sea because
we've just had delivery from
Athens all of the bits and pieces we need
to get the keel finished, get the hull
and keel primed and get the antifoul pain on
Just opened up these boxes and I'll show you what we've got inside
So these four here are
the epoxy primer. We'll be putting as many
coats of epoxy primer on as we can just
to make it so bullet proof so to speak
In the other box we have epoxy filler
and once the epoxy primer coat that
we're about to put on is dry we will
start with filling in some of the holes
in the keel. This is the anti foul paint
that we've chosen it's from the same
group as the antifoul paint that's
currently on the hull and keel. There are
in the shed stowed away two large ten
litre containers of this and we have these two here
to make up a total of 21 litres of antifoul
and we also some thinner so that when we get to the
final stages of our epoxy primer we can
actually thin it out and yeah just make
it easier to go on
So let's mix up some of this bad boy
and slap it on the keel
We've had about 36 hours of high winds
so there's a fair amount of
of dust on the keel so I'm just gonna
give it a wipe down with a damp cloth
Well that's code number two of the epoxy
primer on and of course we'll leave that
now for 24 hours to completely dry and
then we will begin with our epoxy filler
This camera is probably not going to
pick it up but there are lots of
indentations that really would be better
smoothed out before we put a final coat
of epoxy primer on and then once
that is dry we can begin the layers of
antifouling so it's a daily step-by-step
process. But we're getting there!
I've just heard of a birth of some babies,
hopefully we'll be able to see them today
You've had little kittens
Their eyes are still closed, it's been
about a week
Aren't they just gorgeous hey?
Good girl, you gonna go back in there now hey?
Well it's three weeks after the little
kittens were born and they've grown a
lot and they've also opened their eyes
so I thought I'd bring you to
where they're staying now and...
Hello, hello mummy
Where's your babies, hey?
Aw, hello beautifuls
Aren't they gorgeous?
The one in the front, he's
got little black markings on his head
and on his tail has got a black tail and
it's a little boy
And the one at the back is pretty
much all white and we think she's a girl
If there's anybody that's on Evia Island
that would like a beautiful little
very well socialised cat and her kittens
please email us through our website
We think that she belonged to someone
because she really loves to sit on
somebody's knee and have a good cuddle
she's very obedient, yes she's very well
socialised, she's such a friendly thing
very polite, she'd make a wonderful pet
She does need to go to the vets
though as she's definitely got worms
and I think she's got some ear mites
but she's a lovely little girl
All right peeps that's your cat segment
for this week!
One of the many smaller
jobs that Baz did was to seal the
fridge with Sikaflex because we've
noticed over the couple of years that
we've had the boat that the fridge comes
on quite a lot and that's especially
evident in the middle of the night. So we
scraped out all of the old sealant and
you can see Baz now just putting in a
really good thick layer of Sikaflex
Today is the 1st of June and we've
already seen two yachts leave the yard
this morning, a big one and a small one
And now our friends Mark and Marie are
off out of the yard too. They're not going
too far, they're actually just going over
to Limni Harbour where they've got to
complete some paperwork to get their
visas sorted out because they're Kiwis
and of course with the covid 19 lockdown
it means they've been here longer than
they should so a little bit of paperwork
needs doing
Of course for us it's
going to be at least another month, we
won't be splashing until the first of
July and that's if everything goes to
plan
The Speedex courier has just been
to the boat yard and dropped off a
parcel for us.
Unfortunately it's not the
cutlass bearing. It's a parcel from Germany
We ordered a lot of stuff from one of the
big online marine chandlers and they're
based out of Germany so I'm just gonna
quickly go through what we've ordered
and also associate with what we've got
in the box to the jobs that we can actually
carry on with and even bring to a conclusion
So let's have a look in the box
Well SVB is the name of the company we
ordered all the stuff from and they've
sent us this porn magazine!
Look at all the porn in
there. Oh that's dangerous! So that's something
that we can have a read of later
These two things, are spray cans and they are
antifoul for the prop and the propeller
shaft so we can actually get that coated
before it goes back in to the cutlass
bearing when the cutlass
bearing finally arrives
These two bottles contain liquid
which we can paint onto the building
here and make it waterproof so that we don't
get wet when it rains.
This is a toilet service kit
so we can actually put the
toilet back together and back in place
in the aft head and that will be job completed
These two tubes of Sikaflex
295 UV - I don't know why they wanted
the UV one because it's going to be
under water - will allow us to seal the
keel and the hull gap where the water
was getting in in the first place and
then we can actually put epoxy onto the
keel and then we can finally put our
antifoul onto the keel so that would
be another job completed
This box is a
little bit like the Ark of old, everything
is coming in pairs
These are desulfators and we've got one for our
engine start battery and one for our
bank of house batteries so we can get
those connected and then we can
hopefully just walk away and leave the
batteries to have a happy life living
there underneath the bank
forever and ever amen
And finally I only bought
one of these because I figured that I'd
only need one. This is just a complete
kit with crimpers included as well of
little sort of electrical connections so
if we ever need to do any little
electrical connections we have got this
kit to make all the connections of
various shapes and sizes that we need
And that little lot came to a grand
total of four hundred and forty-three
euros and seven cents.
Money well spent I'd say
Now let's crack on with some jobs!
To try and reduce some of the
clutter that's all around A B Sea at the
moment the first job we're going to
tackle is putting back together the aft
head so we'll put the the little salt water
inflow hose flush hose on and the
connector and then we can put the head
back in the head. It doesn't come with
any instructions but just using
common sense I would suggest that that
probably goes on there, that goes on
there and then that screws on there
Whilst I was scouring around the
interwebs to get some better insight on
this job with the toilet I did come
across someone who said always put a
little bit of Vaseline onto the rubber
which will make it last a bit longer with its
lifespan so what we're gonna do
It's just the outside, not the inside?
Yeah well I suppose we could put
it on the inside as well
Oh dear flashbacks to
my Tenerife DJ days
If Vaseline's not handy use
Flora if you can
Coz everybody knows that I'm a Flora man
Some of you will get that
some of you won't
Well I think that's a goodly coat
Well I think that'll last it for years
Mmm, other way
Really?
Yep, that's how you had it before.
Oh yeah okay
It's probably too greasy now!
Oh no, that's sweet
It was
easy getting in and getting the other
one out wasn't it? Certainly was
I can't pick things up now
Hang on a minute so...
Yeah how does that work?
Well can you just screw it on a
bit first just at least grab the thread
and then push it in?
I also seems to recall
the bloke said just keep it hand tight
Okay. Yeah I can't turn it anymore
Cool
Right that's not going anywhere
Marvellous
Well that's kind of quick and easy
Yeah it should be fairly simple getting back
on as well shouldn't it? Yeah
And there we go
the head is now back in the head
that's one job that we can definitely
cross off the list
The job I'm going to
hook into this morning while it's still
relatively cool here is something that
I've been putting off because it's a
destructive job and it always makes me
very stressful when I have to destroy
something on A B Sea.
We have two three hundred litre
stainless steel freshwater
tanks on board A B Sea and they are filled
via some deck fittings here on the
foredeck, one on the starboard side, one
on the port side
The starboard side we
can open and fill it with water no
problem. The port side however is proving
problematic to open and that's basically
because the fitting where the winch
handle goes in has rounded out over the
years so there's just no grip there
anymore and it's it's just impossible to
open it. So what I'm going to do is I'm
going to drill some holes into the top
of the cap that are the same distance
apart as these and then I'm going to
slide that into the holes put a
large leverage bar on here and then
hopefully that'll give me enough force
to at least open the
deck filler. So yeah I'm not looking forward
to this one but it's got to be done
because we reckon that 600 litres of fresh water
will get us from Greece to Turkey
without having to stop anywhere along
the way to top off the water tanks
One thing in particular that I'm trying to
avoid is drilling too deeply into the
filler cap because I don't want to make
a hole all the way through because if we
do manage to get it open and fill up with
freshwater I don't want to holes
allowing saltwater in so I've taped a
bit of tape around the end of the drill
to the depth that I need to go for the
little bit of a tool that I'm going to
try and use to open it.
Let's see how that goes
All right, the moment of truth
*Triumphant chuckles*
Well that's a sigh of relief on many levels
Now we can have our full complement of
600 litres of fresh water on our way to
Turkey, we haven't gone through the top
of the filler cap so it's still going to
be salt water proof and we can now
easily open it thank you
That's a huge relief
Okay so we're gonna
clean this area up bring the hose pipe
over here fill up that tank with water
and then we're going to go and play with
our Sikaflex I think it's 295 UV on the
keel and hull joint
I've just had a closer look at the two
holes that I drilled and this one didn't
penetrate all the way through but
unfortunately this one did so what I'm
gonna do is I'm gonna take the o-ring
off here and have a look how far that's
gone through. Probably what I'm gonna do
is fill these holes with Sikaflex
obviously we don't want saltwater
getting in there no matter how little
would get through there but I can when I
put this back on now tighten it up using
this device which is the proper tool for
the job and it will be just tight enough
so that I can undo it
using this tool in future
Next week on Sailing A B Sea I'll be
bringing you up to date on the cutlass
bearing saga and how we came this close
