In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we finally remove the exhaust section off the engine and discover that it has a turbo charger attached. The bad news is th...

In 1971 the Carpenters released a song
called 'Rainy Days and Mondays' and the
lyric was rainy days and Mondays always
get me down. What happens if you wake up
on a Monday and it's a rainy day?
Do you get twice as down?
It's been raining steadily all night so I think this is a
good time to go to the boat and check
out the forward sail locker to see where
the water's getting in
Well there's no water there and there's
none along here where it was previously, it's not
coming through here either and nothing
there. So, the mystery continues
Ah here yep
from here. Now this is an old thing that's
been patched and that relates to that
there. So there's our wet leakage area
So we're gonna have to get rid of all of
this and patch it up somehow. Another job on the list
And this is the little setup
we've got while we dry out this weeping
keel situation. The things you've gotta
do when you're fixing boats
And it's nicely protected from the rain
It's a bit like owning the boat really
it's a balancing act
As you know it all
started out with a hole in the exhaust
elbow which we thought was great, take it
off, put a new one on, Bob's your uncle
Well of course the hole in the exhaust
album blew a load of dust into the
engine compartment and we spent an awful
lot of time cleaning that up and it's
still not clean. Still a job in progress
that one. Upon further inspection of the
air intake for the engine we discovered that
our engine actually has a turbo on it
and when I inspected the turbo it is
seized up something stupid
Obviously the previous owner hadn't
looked after it as you should with a
turbo and we didn't even know we had a
turbo. So that led to another job and I
had a go and spent quite a few hours
trying to get the turbo off but it was
just doing my nut in, so I got Juliano
from the boatyard here and he's just
spent maybe 45 minutes to an hour and he's
actually going off. So I'm going to clean
up now, put some gloves on and then I'm
gonna take the turbo apart and see if
it's recoverable or not. I'm actually
going to use this product that Heinz
sent us. This is the Brillean Hand Clean
cream and it's it kind of like got a
little bits of grit in it
so I've begun the process already, my
hands are thusly dirty so we'll give
them a good scrub of this stuff and see
what happens
Show and tell Baz, show and tell!
Well let's have a look see.
Wow! Wow!
That's pretty good! Obviously around the
fingernails I've got to give a bit of a
bit of a tighter scrub with a little
scrubbing brush but that's taking that off
real easy - yeah - brilliant stuff
I'm impressed with that yeah cuz
I know how long it took to get it
off with just ordinary washing up
liquid previously - yeah - that's good
Well this is our turbo unit and exhaust
unit and what I'm going to do is I'm
going to strip this section off because
there are bolts and nuts here at the back
and I'm going to get in there to clean
that bit in there then I'm gonna take
these bolts off here which separates
this section for this section and
that should then give me access to that bit
there which is in a hell of a bad shape
It's heavy this thing deservedly so. Right let's
strip this baby down
There you go just a little bit of gentle
persuasion, it's had liquid gasket in
there previously so we'll clean that out
and put it... put new liquid gasket on when
we put it back together
So that's that section
that we saw
and if you look at that, that's that section
pretty bad
Pretty bad
Holy crap
unbelievable
Actually what I'm gonna do is I'm
gonna clean that up around there first
before I take this off coz I really don't
want any of that crud going inside
It's just sooty oily sludge.
A B Sea won't know herself when we've cleaned this up
Can I help?
Not unless you want to get your hands dirty
I love getting my hands dirty. That's part of the fun
Alright well you can clean that one
Okay
Oh
Yeah I know, it's horrible isn't it? It's like tar.
Yeah. Oh that poor boat. Yeah.
If only we'd known. Yeah.
I mean it wasn't as if it
was like really obvious when you ... cuz
like you've looked in the engine haven't you and
sort of cleaned it ...
when we W.O.B.B.L.E.D. and everything but
the turbo part of it was just so far
at the back and kind of hidden by other
parts of the engine
Well we didn't even know we had it
No, that's what I mean and it wasn't
obvious that you would just see it by
looking in there hey?
I've got acetone on the
boat so once I take all this apart yeah
I'll clean it with acetone.
There's something very satisfying about
cleaning really dirty stuff isn't there? Yeah
Oh wow, there's actually metal underneath there. Yeah
This somewhat shiny collection of bits
and pieces in front of me is the
entirety of a turbocharger and exhaust
system of our Yanmar engine. Originally
you might remember that we had a hole in
our exhaust elbow and we bought a
replacement thinking we'd just swap
them out and that'd be the end of the
game. But no, when we were about to put
it all together we found out that the
turbocharger which is pretty much this
bit here and that bit there and this bit
here, were frozen solid. They'd obviously
not been serviced for
The sound goes strange ... please read screen subtitles
Today's mission is to put the exhaust
and turbo components back together to
make a working model.
Put a little bit of WD on here
But now when we spin this side that
spins as well nicely. Better than before
Oh much better
This has got to screw into
there. OhI see what you mean. Yeah
Okay so now you can see
actually. You can line it up. Yep
We lined up? Yeah
Maybe it goes in that way. Der, it would be easier wouldn't it?
Putting back together the exhaust and turbo unit
was going so so well until we got to the
final bolt of six that holds this part
of the unit onto the the rest of the
stuff and these these are the - woops -
these are the little bolts and they sort
of like hook in through there and attach it on
Well I over tightened one of them and it
snapped off. These have all got see-through
holes and of course it snapped off in the
one that doesn't have a see-through
hole. This one here. So we're going to
have to get a guy in town to drill that
out for us and find us a replacement bolt.
So the story of the turbocharger continues
If you're watching this then
you'll know that we put out a weekly
Saturday YouTube video but did you know
that we also put out weekly
his-and-hers blogs on our website?
I'll put the address on the screen right now
And you might be thinking well I've
watched the video what's the point in
reading the blogs? Well there's a lot of
point in reading the blogs. In the blogs we
go into a lot more detail about how
we're feeling about things, whether we're
overwhelmed, excited, stupefied and whatever! We also go into details about pricing and costs and
so on and so fort. So the blogs are very
much more in depth than the videos ever
can be really. It's very difficult
sometimes to instantly pick up a camera
and capture that moment, whereas
recalling the moment in a blog really
sorta like pulls out all of the goodness
So check out the blogs and also I'd just like
to say a quick welcome aboard to Kudret
our newest patron
welcome aboard Kudret and thank you
very much for joining the Patreon family
If you'd like to join our Patreon family
I'll put the address on the screen right
now and you can go and check it out
Join us next week on Sailing A B Sea to see
if we finally get the turbo charger
unit back together and back on the boat
and remember to leave a thumbs up if you
