In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we suddenly realise that we're at the beginning of the end, winter is coming and we must begin heading towards our winter ...

What's happening? Well we're about 12 miles away
from our destination which is probably
about just over two hours and we were
cruising along quite nicely at five
knots when all the sudden we lost point
seven of a knot in speed and the revs
really dropped so we could have found
something around our prop.
Worst comes to worst we might just have to put a mask and snorkel on and have a quick look underneath.
The engine trouble
happened on our way back from Poros to
the mainland but we were still in Poros
and we were going to explore it
This is a mega yacht isn't it? We think it's mega!
All right, I'm gonna put my shoes on.
Right I'll go and put this rubbish away
We're just wandering along the port and
quay area of Poros. It's a very long
port and quay area simply because of the
shape of the island and the channel that
runs out here and it's just ... it's
gorgeous it's a beautiful pretty attractive place
Magical and you know
every corner that you go around there's
something pretty to look at it yes it's
got lots of different aspects hasn't it? It's just
lovely, I'm gonna take lots of photos
There's a supermarket. I think there will be others
That supermarket looks rather closed to me
What day is it?
Wednesday. Oh should be open some time eh? I think
that if we go into the main part of town
behind the main dock
we will find an open one
She has spoken ahhh
The architecture is so varied and colourful and it's just
pretty isn't it? It is. It's lovely. I know I keep saying pretty but it really is it's eye candy
And one of the things that we like to do when we
find these new towns that we've not walk
around is just find a likely-looking back street and go let's go down there and see where it goes
We've just had a nice little wander around
town and we found this nice cafe which
is not too busy and we're gonna order some beer and wine. Also gonna have a conversation with our
son Luke in Australia because we've got
free Wi-Fi
Also got free entertainment
as we watch the boats try an anchor and
come in to moor stern to
Yes so we're in
an outside taverna and the speaker's on
Can you hear me?
Er I can but I think it's probably best for you to take video off just coz the free wifi is a little bit slow.
Okay I just wanted
to see your beautiful face
We did say that we were going to explain to you our
plans for our winter haul out. We were
having a few email conversations with
a very small boat yard in the northern
section of the Evia channel of Greece
This boat yard in particular is really
good for us because the prices for haul
out half of what everyone else is
for hauling out, the price of staying on the
hard is extremely competitive it's so
good. Being on the hard you get water
electricity, showers, toilets, use of their laundry facilities and their tools if you want to work on the boat!
And you're allowed to work on
your own boat and they'll lend you tools
to do the jobs as well. They also have
accommodation on-site which is something
that we're looking into. It's two
kilometers north of Limni on Evia on
the on the Greek island of Evia so
we're going to be inside the Evia
channel well-protected for the winter.
We're planning on being hauled out for
four months and we've got a list as long
as both of my arms to get completed
before we go back into their water for next season. Yeah, we're gonna get fit though.
We will be fit and healthy
About time! Yes as long as it's not too
cold
And while we're here we just want
to say a big welcome on board to our
latest patrons who are Pukka Puu and
Bob Herzog. Thank you very much you two
welcome onboard. Yeah it's great to have
you aboard and we really really
appreciate that you're helping to keep
our journey going, sustainable, yes
Right now though, it is lunchtime and we're
here in this beautiful little bay very
close to Poros and we're gonna have
wraps for lunch
This is something we don't
normally do we're actually going
to insert this real time piece of
filming into an older video that's going
to be released if that makes any sense.
Yeah just to confuse you. Just to totally
confusion you, throw you off the scent!
Real time right now it is around about the 10th or
so of November so it's getting close to
the Christmas, New Year period and last
year we did a very successful Q&A where
you guys asked the questions and we
provided the answers, it was great wasn't it? It was, it was real fun.
We had a lot of fun recording that. Yeah we did.
So we'd like to do that again this
year - yeah - so at the bottom of this video
in the comments section leave any
questions you'd like to ask us about
life on board the whole lifestyle change
what it's been like living in close
quarters for 18 months and just
basically anything you want to know that
we haven't already provided in our blogs
or in the videos that we put out each week and yeah we'll do our best to answer them. Yeah.
So that's coming up
it's probably over the Christmas, New
Year period. Yes. And right now we'd love
to welcome aboard our new patrons Max K
Schwartz, Denise and Brian Keith and Henrik Thystrup
Yes thank you all four of you - oh yes - for
joining our Patreon family. Yes it's
wonderful having you aboard and as we
say to all of our new patrons you're
helping us out more than you can
possibly know thank you. And don't forget
if you are becoming a patron we do have
a private patreon only Facebook page
which when you become a patron you get
automatic access to so we can have
one-on-one chats there and also we bring
a lot of our real-time stuff on to that
particular page for our patrons. Yeah lots of extras there for you thank you.
So cheers and welcome aboard
It is the first week of
November and quite clearly we're not on
the boat A B Sea is actually parked just
over there on the hard
with those masts are behind us and we
are staying in a studio apartment for a
couple of months while we rip the inside
apart to get to the root cause of the
GPS, AIS and autopilot issue and also do
some fairly major work to the engine
It's nice being in a studio apartment
and we're only 200 yards away from the
sea so we've got a lovely view, we're on
the first floor. Yeah it is good - yeah
it's nice, it's great having continuous
running water. Yeah it's great
Another thing as well is, as
many of you might know Aannsha has injured her foot
That's a Moon Boot and so she's gotta wear
that for the next four weeks I would
say - plus or minus ... Yeah I'd say more plus
So a lot of hobbling short distances at the moment
Can I just say for the record no alcohol
was involved in the injuring of the foot
No, definitely no alcohol involved. No
Dream on, dream on! Why are we holding up
these books? Well it's getting close to
Christmas and these books are an
absolute blinder of a read. The reason
why we're promoting them is because our
story is one of eight stories featured
in the book. Basically it's ten sailors
five continents, one harbour, they meet by
chance in Turkey and tell of their own
personal stories of their escape from
the rat race and I tell you what there's some
fabulous stories in there. Yes we also
helped to translate this book from
German to English yeah and we got to see
the stories before they were published
and as we were translating them I was just like gobsmacked
at some of the things that people go through to
fulfill their dream of living on a boat. Oh my word
yeah yeah there's some
really sort of seat of your pants stuff
there isn't there? There certainly is yeah. So on
the screen right now we will put the
name of the author so if you go to
Amazon in whatever country you're in and
type in the name of the author (Brambusch) in search
Dream On will come up
You can get it in
hardback form or electronic form and in German or English too
yeah German or English yeah
Great thing to put under someones
Christmas tree yes
And also if you're looking for other gift ideas for
Christmas I don't know if you know but I
make jewellery out of beach finds like sea
glass and shells and are I use sterling
silver wire and make some really pretty
items which are unique one-of-a-kind and
I also give them with a little story of
where I found each piece. So if you're
looking for a gift idea or if you really
want to support us in another way then
head over to the Mermaid's Treasure Store
which is on our website
Yep and we ship worldwide - Yeah
We're on our way Baz
Yeah this is what you'll
call our final approach so to speak. This
beautiful Tuesday morning we are upping
anchor here at Poros and beginning our
hops to end up finally in the northern
section of the Evia channel where we
will be hauled out for winter. Sadly
we're not going to be able to sail I
don't think because we've looked at the
weather and for the next week there is
no wind, so we will be motoring all the
way so we'll have to figure out a couple
of fuel stops on the way because I know
that we don't have a full tank and
that's something we gotta pay attention to.
But yeah it's just coming up to
9 o'clock in the morning - yeah - we're about
to bring the dinghy up and we are off to
Sounion, that's our first stop. Yeah
first top to Sounion then to Porto Rafti
and then to 'Marmar-eye', 'Marmaree' even. Marmari even ... sorry if I'm ruining the
Greek pronunciation of all your beautiful
little towns and villages but yeah those
are our first three hops and then we'll
figure out something after that. Yeah
I've been looking in the pilot books and
things today on the way to find out a
few options yeah so come along for the
final ride, yes. Oh by the way
Noone Anybody Knows, got me anchor bib on
Good idea
Look at that!
What's happening? Well we're about 12 miles away
from our destination which is probably
about just over two hours and we were
cruising along quite nicely at five
knots when all of a sudden we lost point
seven of a knot in speed and the revs
really dropped so we could have found
something around our prop so I've taken us
into neutral, we've now got zero headway.
I'm gonna go into reverse
and see if that clears the prop
So she seems to be moving normally. Everything sounds and feels right
Through back into overdrive again and let's see what
happens. We should be able to get to
about five knots at 1500 revs in overdrive
Worst comes to worst we might just have to put a
mask and snorkel on and have a quick look underneath
But let's see what we've got here
Once we go into overdrive it takes a while
for us to come up to speed up to revs
just simply because the way the prop is
cutting through the water.
Four point five knots
at close enough to 1,400 revs ... 4.6
It's better already isn't it? It's better already
I just don't believe there'd be that much current here
that wouldn't take us down why point seven of a knot
It just suddenly went as well didn't it? There was definitely, something definitely changed
What I'm going to do is I'm going to go into
normal drive so back into neutral
Let the prop feather
Into forward
That's better. Right now we're in normal drive.
Let's see what we can do
That's our normal speed for normal
drive ahead - 5.3 knots at 2000
That's not good - (smoke). But we do have a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust
which is more than usual. Yeah and it's not
white either is it? I might throw the revs up a bit and see if we can clean things out
Yeah that's not normal. No.
How far have we got to go? We've still got 12 miles. Okay
Coz we're going to here
All right well we're gonna stay in normal drive and we'll just get there and
When we get there we'll dive and take a look see if there's anything... around the prop
around the prop, but I think it's an exhaust issue. Okay
It's the exhaust elbow where the exhaust
comes out of the engine
it gets blocked with soot. Oh okay.
That was
one of the jobs on the list for this
winter to clean out the exhaust elbow or even
replace the exhaust elbow with a stainless steel one
Let's get from here to here
without incident. Yeah. Alright.
