In this episode of Sailing A B Sea one of us is going in and it's not me. Baz pulls rank as captain and says one of us is going in and it's not me as we make...

Oh my god it's cold. Stop talking about
it
and get it over something
It's caught on a rock under the water
Okay it's free!
Appropriate hatches shut Captain
Jolly good number 1. Oh, need to get this off first. Okay
Tuesday morning, there might be a bit
of wind noise on this microphone but
that's just the way the wind blows
around these parts. Talking of wind
pretty good holding here last night. The
bottom is really muddy we swung around
as the wind changed throughout the night
but we're still where we set our anchor so
we're all good. Where are we going today?
Kukucakak... I haven't seen it written down and I
didn't quite get it from Jimness
Furnessus so I'm not entirely sure. It's
over that way somewhere. I'll let you know
when I've seen it written down.
Alright, the plan
is today we do have a bit of wind so
hopefully we won't be able to get the
sails out which just depends what
happens what we get outside the
funneling effect of this bay. So we're
gonna head north west in the general
direction of Göcek, sailing through
the the Göcek island area really just
to have a look at it we're not gonna
stop anywhere in there I don't think
then we'll get down to the western tip
of the Göcek area and pull into a
little anchorage for tonight. See how that goes hey?
Yeah, looking forward to it. Hopefully
we'll be sailing today. Yeah praise the
wind gods!
Oh please wind gods!
There's our buddy
boat Acheron with Jim just securing the
dinghy to the back end
Aannsha's just releasing the snubber so
I'd better head back to the cockpit ready
for bringing up the anchor
Okay, take the helm, hold her steady straight out the bay, I'm gonna bring out the main.
Wake!!
We motored in to Göcek bay past the
five marinas.
Göcek has very good
conditions for sailing and has lots of
tiny attractive little bays which makes
it very attractive to sailors. But we
were headed for Büyük Ağa Köyü so we
kept on going. We passed through the
channel between Domuz Adası and
Tersane Adası which are two small
islands close to Göcek and we headed
southwest towards our destination.
And you've got to anchor and then tie back
to shore. We're watching Jim doing it
first to get an idea of how it's done
but wish us luck!
Oh my god it's cold!
Stop talking about it and get it over
something
It's caught on a rock under water.
Okay it's free!
Okay, so you come back on board now and take in
some of the anchor chain. Yep.
After we'd put the boat to bed
Jim collected us in his dinghy and we
went to shore to check out the Roman and
Byzantine ruins that were on the nearby hill
We've just completed our first
tying back to the shore anchoring
manoeuvre and it went fairly well
actually. Aannsha was the brave soul that
went into the water but it is 22 degrees
these days so it's not so bad.
Oh minimise it!
Shh. Quiet in the back seats!
See oh there's our buddy boat Acheron and
that's us behind and
normally in the the summer here this
whole wall is just lined with boats all
tied back to the shore.
This is a great
little spot. We're spending a night here tonight
Right now though we're out for
an afternoon walk to stretch the legs
and we're going to some ruins at the top
of this hill. Apparently it's a
relatively easy walk about 20 or 30
minutes to the top and the views are
spectacular
Our objective!
Yeah. Down in the valley there's there's
more look-see
That's one on the hillside small one
a fairly big one here, remains of a big one there
So this farm down here in the
valley
they've got cattle, I can hear goats
there are plenty of beehives as well so
they're getting honey and up on the
hillside there there are some sheep so
they've got a lot of livestock here so
you see there's a circular building a
humpy building there and there's another
one just beyond that silver shack. Those
are wells.
Look at this guy. Don't know what he's doing
there with his front legs - Press ups - it's like he's
trying to - press ups! He's exercising is he? Yeah
So I'm just looking at the now obviously
weather-worn craftsmanship of this is
supporting column and there's ridges
being cut into here and they must have
been pristine in their day but if we
follow our eye up we can see there's a
top lintel which has broken off but the
carving continues perfectly up the
lintel and then into the corner and
across. Care and attention to detail and
even if you look underneath this little
bit here there's a like a little leaf
motif of some sort carved into the rock there. Wow
As far as I can tell there isn't a human
with that herd of goats but they're very
obviously going somewhere
Good morning all it is May the 1st it's
a slightly overcast day but the sun
is trying to get through somehow. Got a
bit rolly in the night because the
entrance to this bay is wide open
but wasn't too bad wasn't too bad at all
Now we're here to tell you about an
executive decision that we've been
making! We are 6 hours away from Marmaris
which was our first intended destination
to get the autopilot repaired and
because it's the 1st of May we've
decided to go directly there today
instead of doing a few more overnight
anchorage's in pretty places because (a)
we don't know how long the repair of the
autopilot is actually going to take and
how that's actually going to turn out
and the second reason is it's also a big
blow coming in a couple of days and we
want to be tucked away nice and safe
yeah it does. Yeah. It will be Thursday afternoon
and all through Friday I think. Yeah. With
gusts up to 40 knots? Yeah. So we'd rather
be tucked in safely.
So we're about half
an hour away from leaving here and then
looking at the flag I don't think we're
in for any wind again so now eager to
crack into Marmaris and finally find a
solution to this autopilot issue. Yeah
it'll be just great to be able to push the
button. So we're looking forward to
getting to Marmaris. Yes. About six hours
Baz? Yeah
We just dropped anchor in
Marmaris in the northern sort of corner
in ten metres of water. Of course the
Mantus went in first time and stuck
like glue. We've got 40 metres of chain
out and we've got a wind currently coming
from the east. It's a bit choppy in here, like
the water is not dead flat calm but
maybe when the wind drops. Yeah I think
so
but then kind of makes you wonder what
its gonna be like when the big blow
comes. Yeah well the big blow is coming from
there and we are 300, 400 metres off the
shore. So we'll be getting blown that way
and there shouldn't be any fetch at all so
it should be technically dead calm for us
and then we'll let out the rest of our
chain to compensate
and we should be good. We went into like
a grassy muddy bottom which is great for
a Mantus. Yes. So we're gonna put the boat
to bed, drop the dinghy because our buddy
boat Jim is just passing in front of our
bow he's got some time in the marina
here at the Setur Marina as part of
his contract, so we'll scoot on over to him and see
if we can find a beer
Why not? It's what we always do at the end of every segment! Yeah!
Join us next
week in Marmaris and find out if we get
the autopilot fixed. If you've enjoyed this
